20-year-old academy striker ready for Championship move after 13 years at LFC

Academy forward Layton Stewart has been at Liverpool since he was seven but is now trading his youth club for a chance in the league.

The 20-year-old scored 12 goals in 21 U21 appearances last season, a valuable boost to his confidence following a nightmarish injury.

The striker was sidelined for 13 months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury and the 2022/23 season was his chance to get back on the pitch and build a strong foundation for himself.

Jurgen Klopp helped his return by giving the youngster his senior debut in November. He was named in the starting line-up for the Carabao Cup clash with Derby at Anfield, an experience he described as “invaluable”.

But the next chapter in his career is to take him to Preston on a three-year deal, with Stewart hoping to find consistent first-team minutes in the Championship.

The move is due to be announced on Saturday and, as reported by the Athletic, the deal includes a buy-back clause, which is standard practice for the club when it comes to deals like this. The striker was expected to become the last academy player on loan, but this transfer is much more permanent and the Reds will feel in good hands at Preston.

Liverpool have a close relationship with the Lilywhites and have loaned out Sepp van den Berg in the past and Calvin Ramsay is currently on loan at Deepdale.

Stewart’s move ends his 13-year tenure at the club, but he leaves the club having fulfilled his childhood dream.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed of ever since I knew what Liverpool is,” he said after making his senior debut at Anfield in November.

“I come and watch them week after week and once I step onto the pitch at Anfield I again have no words to describe it.”
