Detroit Lions’ David Montgomery’s Postseason Return Appears Imminent
In a promising development for the Detroit Lions, running back David Montgomery is nearing a return for the team’s postseason push. After opting to forgo surgery on his MCL injury, Montgomery focused on rehabilitation with the hope of being ready for the playoffs, and it looks like that goal is set to become a reality.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed confidence on Tuesday, confirming that Montgomery is on track to play in the team’s Divisional Round playoff game. When asked if Montgomery would be available, Campbell responded firmly, “I do,” signaling the team’s optimism about his return.
The Lions (15-2), having secured the NFC’s top seed, are on a bye this weekend and will host an opponent in the Divisional Round, scheduled for either Saturday, Jan. 18, or Sunday, Jan. 19.
Having Montgomery back would be a significant boost for Detroit. The running back, who racked up 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in just 14 games this season, was injured during a Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Initially, surgery seemed inevitable, but after seeking multiple medical opinions, it was determined that rehab could be a viable option. It appears Montgomery’s decision to go this route will pay off, potentially strengthening the Lions’ postseason hopes.
But Montgomery is far from the only player dealing with injuries. Rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold suffered a foot contusion during the Lions’ recent victory over the Minnesota Vikings, and NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Arnold is considered day-to-day.
Unfortunately, not all the news is as optimistic. Linebacker Derrick Barnes (knee) and cornerback Carlton Davis (jaw) will not be returning for the postseason, as confirmed by Campbell. “I don’t see them coming back, at all,” Campbell stated on Tuesday.
In another blow, star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who broke his leg on October 13, is also unlikely to return. While Campbell acknowledged Hutchinson’s season-ending injury, he didn’t rule out a potential recovery. “If anybody can come back from this, it would be Aidan,” Campbell said, though he emphasized the severity of the injury.
As the Lions prepare for the postseason, it’s clear that injuries will remain a concern, but the return of David Montgomery provides a much-needed boost for the team as they look to make a deep playoff run.
