Lions Release Veteran Defender Prior to Week 17 MNF

The Detroit Lions have been making moves this week to adjust their 53-man roster in preparation for their Monday night primetime game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Earlier this week, the Lions released veteran linebacker David Long Jr., who had been claimed off waivers from the Tennessee Titans but failed his physical. Then, on Thursday, Detroit re-signed veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who recently completed his first year as a high school football coach in Florida.

In addition to these moves, the Lions reportedly waived veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander on Thursday. However, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Detroit is hoping Alexander clears waivers so they can re-sign him to the practice squad.

Alexander, 30, was signed to the 53-man roster in late November after the Lions dealt with multiple linebacker injuries. He had been with the Denver Broncos earlier this season, playing in three games (two starts) after being signed to their practice squad in September. During his time with Denver, Alexander recorded just eight combined tackles and a forced fumble while playing 35 percent of the defensive snaps. With the Lions, he played in two games, logging 29 defensive snaps and recording four combined tackles in his two starts.

Detroit currently has 16 players on its practice squad, but only two linebackers—Abraham Beauplan and DaRon Gilbert. As a result, the Lions will need to make a cut to create space for Alexander. While the team is eager to re-sign him due to his vast experience, which could prove valuable in the playoffs, the good news is that the Lions are starting to regain health at the linebacker position, which is perfect timing.

On Monday, head coach Dan Campbell informed reporters that Jalen Reeves-Maybin could be available this week after returning to practice last week following a neck injury. Reeves-Maybin was a full participant in Thursday’s practice, which is a promising sign for his potential availability for Monday night’s game.

In addition to Reeves-Maybin, starting linebacker Alex Anzalone is reportedly on track to return before the regular season concludes after suffering a broken forearm in Week 11. While injuries have heavily impacted the Lions this season, players like Alexander have stepped up when needed.
