Liverpool have a new number seven! No, it’s not a new signing, it’s Luis Diaz improving his number for the Reds!
Diaz has opted to change his shirt number ahead of the new season, with Liverpool confirming details for those who have already purchased his number 23 shirt.
Since Diaz’s arrival from Porto at the start of 2022, the Colombian has worn the number 23 shirt previously worn by Jamie Carragher and Xherdan Shaqiri.
But with the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino this summer, a number of iconic numbers have come to light.
Liverpool have now announced that Diaz will wear the number 7 shirt from next season, the same number he wears for his national team on international duty.
Diaz also previously wore a seven at Porto. Before Milner, the number 7 was worn by Luis Suarez, Steve McManaman and Harry Kewell in the Premier League era.
Most famously it has become synonymous with Kenny Dalglish, who wore it for 10 successful seasons in the 70s and 80s, taking over from Kevin Keegan as Liverpool’s number 7 shirt became iconic.
Diaz’s decision to switch shirts follows the release of Liverpool’s new home kit for 2023/24, and the winger will personally refund those who have already purchased his number 23 shirt.
Fans who have already purchased the 2023/24 home replica shirt, printed with the name ‘Luis Diaz’ and the number ’23’, will be refunded personally by the forward in an equal exchange for a ‘Luis Diaz’ Jersey 7 ′.
The exchange only applies to all ‘Luis Diaz 23’ 2023-24 Home shirt or kit purchased from official club retailers, via the LFC Official Online Store or the LFC Retail App.
Any qualifying jerseys or gear must be returned with proof of purchase by July 31, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. BST. Full terms and conditions can be found here.
All exchanged Luiz Diaz 23 shirts and kits will be retained by the club and donated to the LFC Foundation.
