Trevon Diggs’ latest injury update is the last thing the Cowboys’ defense wanted

The already strained defense faces more challenges as Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has missed another practice day.

Player health has been a significant concern for the Dallas Cowboys this season, and there seems to be no change in their fortune. Diggs unexpectedly missed Wednesday’s camp, joining a long list of injured defenders. Initially, his injury was undisclosed, but Diggs later revealed that he was dealing with a calf issue, stating he was “working through it,” which includes missing practice once again.

According to Jon Machota, while the Cowboys welcomed back Brandon Aubrey from jury duty, Diggs will spend this session with the rehab group.

The Dallas defense has faced considerable struggles this season, but it’s difficult to critique them too harshly. Key players like Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Sam Williams, and DaRon Bland have all been sidelined at various times, with replacements like Marshawn Kneeland and Caelen Carson also injured.

Adding Diggs to this list feels particularly concerning given the number of injuries already affecting the team. Diggs missed all but two games in 2023 due to a torn ACL, and they have yet to see him and Bland play together this season. While there is hope for Bland’s return, Diggs’ status remains a concern.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs addressed his intense “deez nuts” exchange with a reporter following the team’s 30-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium. This defeat leaves the Cowboys with a 3-4 record, putting them behind the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders in the NFC East. The loss was particularly frustrating as they allowed three touchdowns in the third quarter.

After the game, a reporter criticized Diggs for his effort during a George Kittle interception that put the 49ers close to the goal line. Diggs retorted by questioning the reporter’s understanding of the play, stating, “You don’t know football,” and then walked away, adding, “We can talk about deez nuts,” referencing a well-known meme.

On “The Edge with Micah Parsons,” Diggs reflected on the “unnecessary” altercation, expressing that he felt the reporter was using his name for attention. He said, “I felt he was trying to use my name for clicks,” and noted how he approached the reporter after recognizing him.

Diggs shared that he was emotional due to the recent loss, saying, “I’m a competitor. I wanted to win,” which contributed to his reaction. Nonetheless, he maintained that the reporter’s comments were unjustified. “It doesn’t make it right for anybody to be saying anything, or trying to throw dirt on your name, make it seem like you’re doing a bad job.”

He emphasized, “I felt like I played my hardest game yesterday… for him to throw dirt on my name didn’t sit right with me because [he’s] completely wrong.”

He concluded, “If I was wrong, gave up a play, I can’t say nothing. I have to take that on the chin. You saying anything, I’m not going to take that. I’m not going to allow you to try to make me seem I’m the problem. That’s not cool.”

The Cowboys are set to play against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
