Blink of an Eye is a 2019 documentary film that explores the dramatic, emotional, and historic events surrounding two NASCAR legends, Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt, during the 2001 Daytona 500. Directed, written, and produced by Paul Taublieb, the documentary delves into the extraordinary moments of that race, which stands as one of NASCAR’s most bittersweet chapters.
The film highlights the deep friendship between Waltrip and Earnhardt, with the 2001 Daytona 500 being a pivotal moment in their relationship. Waltrip secured his first-ever Cup Series victory after 462 attempts, yet the triumph was marred by the tragic death of his friend, mentor, and team owner, Dale Earnhardt, on the final lap.
Blink of an Eye mainly focuses on Michael Waltrip’s career, detailing the emotional weight of his long winless streak, which stretched over a decade. It also showcases Earnhardt’s mentorship, illustrating how Earnhardt believed in Waltrip when others had given up on him and brought him on to drive for his team, Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI), in 2001.
The documentary captures the teamwork between Waltrip, Earnhardt Jr., and Dale Earnhardt Sr. during the 2001 Daytona 500. Earnhardt Sr. played a crucial role by blocking the field to help Waltrip and Earnhardt Jr. secure a 1-2 finish. However, the film also poignantly portrays Earnhardt Sr.’s fatal crash, which occurred just moments before Waltrip crossed the finish line to claim his first Cup win on his 463rd attempt.
Available on PLEX, Blink of an Eye features behind-the-scenes footage that makes it a must-watch for any NASCAR fan.
“I wanted him to come there” – Michael Waltrip once reflected on the emotional void he felt after his first NASCAR Cup victory, a win that was bittersweet due to Dale Earnhardt’s death.
During a 2019 interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Waltrip spoke candidly about the complex emotions surrounding his 2001 Daytona 500 victory. As he stood in Victory Lane, he shared how he kept looking for Earnhardt, wishing for his friend’s presence during the celebration:
“I remember it vividly and I always will because… I was in Victory Lane and everything was perfect. My family was there, there was champagne and confetti and I just kept looking over my shoulder at the gate into Victory Lane and I was wondering when Dale was gonna walk in, you know…I wanted that hug. I wanted that more than I wanted the money or the trophy. I wanted him to come there and I kept looking and he never came.”
Waltrip ended his Cup Series career with four wins and 133 top-10 finishes in 784 starts, with his final race taking place at the 2017 Daytona 500. While Waltrip’s legacy remains significant, Dale Earnhardt is forever remembered for his immense contribution to NASCAR and the lasting impact he had on the sport.
