The Detroit Lions have been one of the most intriguing teams this NFL offseason, losing both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn after their playoff loss to the Washington Commanders.
It wasn’t the ideal conclusion that the Lions seemed poised for, and now their situation is becoming increasingly challenging. The defense, largely affected by injuries, faltered late in the season, ultimately becoming the team’s weak point down the stretch.
The front office is aware that improvements are needed. Thankfully, there’s one former four-time Pro Bowl defender still available who would be the perfect addition to start April on a positive note.
Lions Must Sign Matthew Judon Before It’s Too Late.
While it’s undeniable that Aidan Hutchinson is an elite pass rusher, his season-ending injury revealed a significant flaw in the roster’s construction. Without him, Detroit lacked that top-tier defensive line presence, a factor that helped propel the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl, leaving the defense vulnerable to attacks, as seen with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Matthew Judon, who has previously played for the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, and Atlanta Falcons, is still available. He would be an ideal fit next to Hutchinson, giving the Lions a pair of formidable edge rushers. At 32 years old, Judon may not be the player he once was, but he remains a disruptive force whose presence would improve the defense as a whole.
In 2024, Judon recorded 5.5 sacks and played in all 17 games. Just two years ago, he posted 15.5 sacks with a better defense, suggesting that his success is at least partly reliant on playing alongside strong teammates. While he may not be capable of carrying a defensive line, he’s an excellent secondary option when given the chance.
Currently, the Lions have few options unless they plan to address the position in the 2025 NFL Draft later this month. With most quality free agents already signed, Judon could be signed to a relatively affordable contract to prove his value before potentially securing a larger deal next year.
This isn’t the first time Judon has been linked to Detroit. The clock is ticking, and general manager Brad Holmes must act quickly to ensure the Lions don’t regress next season amid the numerous changes within the organization. A pairing of Judon and Hutchinson would form a formidable duo, and Holmes must make this move happen.
