South Carolina women’s basketball bolsters roster with French prospect ahead of Texas

The second-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball squad is preparing to unveil a significant roster addition when they face fourth-ranked Texas this Thursday evening. Head coach Dawn Staley announced Wednesday that newly acquired player Alicia Tournebize will be eligible to compete in the high-profile contest.

From Professional Ranks to College Basketball

The towering 6-foot-7 forward brings professional experience from France’s basketball leagues before deciding to join South Carolina’s program in December. The 18-year-old Tournebize touched down in Columbia on New Year’s Day and began team workouts on January 6, per the Greenville News. While she participated in pregame warmups before the Gamecocks’ 65-43 victory over Georgia this past Sunday, she remained on the bench throughout the contest.

Staley expressed confidence in her newest player’s readiness during her Wednesday press conference, stating “She looked good. She’ll play, she’ll definitely play.”

Impressive International Resume

The Vichy, France native showcased her talents at the 2025 U18 EuroBasket Tournament, posting averages of 12.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while representing her country. Tournebize has also gained recognition for her ability to execute powerful one-handed dunks with ease.

Her impact on the practice court has already caught the attention of her new teammates, who praise both her technical abilities and mental approach to the game.

Sophomore Joyce Edwards shared her observations with reporters, noting that “She’s smart like she catches on things fast. Her defense is great. Offensively she can shoot, she can space the floor out.” Edwards added that opponents will face challenges preparing for Tournebize, explaining “I feel like nobody has played her so it’s going to be hard to scout against her and I’m just excited to see her out there playing.”

Growing Trend in Women’s College Basketball

Tournebize represents a growing phenomenon of international athletes with professional backgrounds entering the American collegiate system. Kansas State added Belgian player Nastja Claessens this season—despite being selected by Washington in the 2024 WNBA Draft without ultimately signing—and she’s currently contributing 11.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest. Similarly, North Carolina brought in Liza Astakhova, who previously competed in Russia’s professional leagues.
