Beamer’s Replacement Hire Already Rated Among the SEC’s Elite

Sterling Lucas

When Sterling Lucas left South Carolina this winter to join LSU, the Gamecocks lost one of their most effective recruiters and player developers. Replacing him wouldn’t be easy — but early returns suggest Shane Beamer nailed the hire.

The Numbers Back Up the Move

Beamer turned to former Penn State assistant Deion Barnes to take over the defensive ends and outside linebackers room, and according to analytics expert Dave Bartoo of Matrix Analytical Solutions, the move ranks among the best in the conference. Bartoo, who has been grading position coaches across power conference football, slotted Barnes as the No. 3 EDGE coach in the entire SEC.

Bartoo’s model adjusts for talent level and evaluates coaches on a per-play basis. By that measure, only Missouri’s Brian Early and Oklahoma’s Miguel Chavis rated ahead of Barnes among SEC edge-rushing coaches. His .77204 score would have placed him third in either the Big Ten or ACC, and first among all Big 12 position coaches.

Barnes isn’t the only South Carolina assistant turning up in Bartoo’s rankings. Kendal Briles checked in at No. 4 among quarterback coaches, Stan Drayton at No. 4 among running backs coaches, Randy Clements at No. 1 among offensive line coaches, and Torrian Gray at No. 3 among defensive backs coaches.

A Player Turned Coach With Penn State Roots

Barnes’ path to South Carolina runs almost entirely through Penn State. As a player, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned All-Big Ten recognition before moving on to a brief pro career that included stints with the NFL’s Jets and Chiefs, as well as the AAF’s San Antonio Commanders.

He then returned to State College, working three years as a graduate assistant before being elevated to full-time defensive line coach in 2023. Over his six seasons on staff, Barnes helped develop 21 All-Big Ten honorees and three All-Americans. During that stretch, Penn State led the entire sport in producing NFL Draft picks at the EDGE position, sending seven to the league.

The production showed up in the box score, too. Across his three years running the position room, Barnes’ defensive fronts consistently ranked among the nation’s best in sacks and tackles for loss. His résumé includes a hand in developing standouts like Abdul Carter, Chop Robinson, and Dani Dennis-Sutton.

A Loaded Room Awaits in Columbia

Barnes won’t be starting from scratch at South Carolina. He inherits a defensive end room headlined by projected first-round talent Dylan Stewart, along with former blue-chip recruits Julian Walker, Caleb Herring, Jaquavious Dodd, and George Wilson — all of whom are expected to factor into the Gamecocks’ 2026 pass rush.

Bottom Line

Losing Sterling Lucas looked like it could be a real setback for South Carolina’s defensive front, but Shane Beamer’s hire of Deion Barnes has analytics models suggesting the Gamecocks may have actually upgraded the position. With a proven developer now in charge of a talented room led by Dylan Stewart, South Carolina’s edge-rushing unit looks like a strength heading into 2026.
