South Carolina’s recruiting momentum on the defensive back trail continued Thursday night, as the program secured its second Blue Chip prospect from Hough High School in as many days. Class of 2027 four-star safety Davion Jones committed to the Gamecocks, choosing South Carolina over LSU, Auburn, and Georgia.
The pledge represented a notable reversal — Jones had appeared set to land with LSU as recently as Sunday, having quietly committed there before South Carolina made a late push to flip him. Head coach Shane Beamer welcomed the news publicly on social media Monday.
Jones’ announcement follows five-star defensive back Josh Dobson’s commitment to the Gamecocks just a day earlier.
Jones made his final official visit to Columbia a few weeks prior to committing, and the trip left an impression rooted in familiar faces. He said, “I loved how I just got a chance to spend time with a couple of guys that I knew, a couple of guys that I grew up playing with, a couple of guys I played against over the years. That was just a good experience.”
Much of the credit for the recruitment goes to defensive backs coach Torrian Gray, who has built a relationship with Jones dating back years. Jones explained, “Me and T Gray, we’ve always had a great relationship. Ever since eighth grade, my eighth grade summer, I came down for a spring practice. Ever since then, our relationship has been on the upside.”
On the recruiting boards, Jones checks in as the No. 201 overall prospect nationally and the No. 18 safety in his class according to Rivals’ industry composite rankings, with a No. 128 overall and No. 12 safety ranking on Rivals’ own scale. Within North Carolina, he’s rated the No. 7 prospect in the state.
Despite his safety designation, Jones is expected to have room to move around the secondary in Columbia. He noted, “I definitely have the flexibility to play wherever I want. The corner, nickel, safety. So whichever one I wanted to play, whichever one I can get me on the field faster is what they’ll put me at.”
Statistically, the 5-foot-11, 175-pound defender put together a strong junior campaign in 2025, racking up 50 tackles, four pass breakups, and four interceptions. He also made an impact on offense, hauling in 14 receptions for 217 yards and a touchdown.
Interestingly, Jones and Dobson didn’t play together last season — Jones suited up for West Charlotte while Dobson played at Catawba Ridge in Fort Mill, South Carolina — but the two will be reunited as teammates at Hough this fall.
South Carolina’s recruiting run isn’t finished yet: four-star offensive lineman Nate Carson (Irmo, S.C.) and three-star edge rusher Jayden Broadie (Rolesville, N.C.) are both expected to announce decisions over the following two days.
