Darwin Nunez suffers a setback as a result of Cody Gakpo’s admission, and Jurgen Klopp now has a problem.

Cody Gakpo, who joined Liverpool in January, is keen to remain the club’s No.9, although Jürgen Klopp is also available at Anfield for Darwin Nunez.

Cody Gakpo now sees himself as a centre-forward – and that could be bad news for Liverpool’s £85m Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez.

Gakpo, 24, insists he has changed in the five months he worked with Jurgen Klopp after joining Anfield in a £35million deal from PSV Eindhoven.

Klopp deployed the Dutchman in the middle after spending most of his career on the wing – and Nunez was moved to the wing after struggling for goals.

Gakpo said: “Jürgen Klopp and his assistant Pepijn Lijnders indicated what they wanted from me when I first came to Liverpool.

“It took a bit of getting used to at first, but eventually I grew into the role and would like to keep this position permanently.

“I feel like I’m getting better and better at this stage. “At PSV I mainly played from the left wing. It was Guus Hiddink who first pointed out to me that I needed to develop more broadly as a striker

“I didn’t want to believe it at the time. I felt comfortable on the left wing, but now I am convinced that the role of striker suits me.”

Gakpo was taken from under Manchester United’s noses by the Reds after an impressive World Cup run.
He has scored seven goals in 17 Premier League appearances since being brought on.

He added: “At Liverpool there is someone running the attack called Mo Salah.

“I can’t say enough about Mo. Everything he has produced on the pitch as a striker and the way he has performed at the highest level for so many years is truly impressive.
“That’s why I see this man as the true leader of our vanguard.”
