Jürgen Klopp said “new players have to come” on the club’s podcast
Saudi interest in Jordan Henderson and Fabinho changed their plans
The club has already signed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai
Jurgen Klopp has said more new faces are due to arrive at Liverpool for the first game of the Premier League season and asked fans to trust him.
The Reds have already beefed up their creative options by signing Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for £35m Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig for £60m.
However, a Saudi storm jeopardized their plans with Jordan Henderson completing Al-Ettifaq and Al-Ittihad medicals and Bayern Munich chasing Fabinho.
The turmoil has left the Merseysiders with first-team midfield options should he leave and Klopp confirmed the club are not yet ready in the transfer market.
“There are so many things to do,” he said during a talk on the We are Liverpool club podcast. The transfer window is open. If my day had 28 hours right now it wouldn’t be a problem – I could easily fill them!
“With all the stuff you have to do left and right, my focus and energy has to go mostly into workouts, which is what I do. Then I can try to help with other things on both sides of the sessions.
Three and a half weeks until the first game of the season. There is still a lot to do before then, certainly also in terms of transfer market. “Now it’s clear. And it will happen. New players have to come. We will have a good team.’
Several midfield options have been linked with Liverpool.
There have been speculations of an attack on 19-year-old Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, but his £50m price tag could put them off given his relative inexperience.
The club also cost a move for Crystal Palace player Cheick Doucoure. The south London side have slapped a £70m valuation on the Mali international but their resolve has yet to be tested by a bid.
Earlier in the summer it appeared their interest in Nice’s Khepren Thuram had cooled following the takeover of Szoboszlai, but the departures of Henderson and Fabinho could reignite it.
Further afield, they could see Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, who impressed in the World Cup with Morocco, or Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch.
Klopp also said: ‘Seven and a half years ago… I said we have to go from doubters to believers. ‘I didn’t know [at] the time that this was going to be a line from that period because we all change. So, I wasn’t sure at the time and maybe I was a doubter at first, but I’ve become a firm believer.
‘But of course, in the last few years, almost winning the quadruple but not actually doing it, and then having the season that we’ve had, that can create some doubts, I know.
‘Then people want to change: one day they want to change the team in 12 positions and then the next day only one. And then we switch and then it’s the wrong player, ‘No, no, not him’, and stuff like that. “What I want to ask is: trust us.”
“We really feel responsible for what happens here and we are going to do absolutely everything we can to have a season that, in the best sense of the word, we will never forget.” That’s the plan.
