Their feud after Klopp was unimpressed by Man United’s comments
The former Villa striker later said he “unsettled” the Liverpool manager
Agbonlahor offered to have coffee with Klopp and reconcile their differences
Gabby Agbonlahor has offered to settle her feud with Jurgen Klopp and has named the Liverpool manager as her favorite Premier League manager.
The former Aston Villa striker was embroiled in a war of words with the German last season, which started unsurprisingly after criticism leveled at Liverpool’s rivals Manchester United.
Klopp was unhappy with Agbonlahor calling United “amateurs” and “a mess” after being beaten 4-0 by Brentford in Ten Hag’s second Premier League game as manager.
The Liverpool manager then responded to Agbonlahor’s comments ahead of his match against Manchester United, leading the talkSPORT pundit to say that he had “rocked” the German.
Despite last season’s feud, Agbonlahor wants to restart the new season and offered to settle their differences
He told talkSPORT: ‘Jurgen, if you’re listening, this is my trick. We’ll have a coffee and settle our differences.
“Klopp was an exceptional manager and last season surprised him – (Sadio) Mane left, (Luis) Diaz got injured and (Diogo) Jota got injured.” People have Trent (Alexander-Arnold) and their defense tested more, but the signings they’ve brought in with even more signings mean they’ll bounce back.
“They may not manage to win the Premier League (this season) but they can compete with Arsenal.”
The 36-year-old went on to say Klopp was his favorite Premier League manager.
He added: “If you looked at Liverpool, especially Mane, (Mo) Salah and (Roberto) Firmino, at that time there was no joke. This is the kind of football I loved. I didn’t really like tiki-taka and all that stuff, I wanted to grab the ball and run.
Gareth Barry would catch the ball and I would run after him. Ashley Young catches the ball, would play it from behind. I’d like to go through in goal, 1 against 1 and so it was for Liverpool. Trent, (Andy) Robertson, Salah, Mane; grab the ball, go one-on-one, play it across the penalty area, and touch or score yourself. I loved that kind of football.\’
While Agbonlahor may be keen to settle their differences, Liverpool boss Klopp may not be so willing.
Six days after Agbonlahor’s criticism of Manchester United, Klopp told a press conference: “I’ve been listening to Gabby…” the German said, apparently getting Agbonlahor’s last name wrong.
“He lost to us 6-0 in my first season and I don’t remember him being a mentality monster on the pitch.
What he said on that show. I almost called to tell him he forgot he was a player. It was amazing.\’
Klopp defended Manchester United after Agbonlahor labeled them ‘amateurs’ and ‘a mess’ after their 4-0 defeat to Brentford in Erik ten Hag’s second Premier League match
Agbonlahor responded to Klopp’s comments by tweeting a photo of him scoring the only goal in Villa’s 1-0 win at Anfield in September 2014.
In October, Agbonlahor derisively labeled Klopp a ‘Mr Mentality Monster’ following Liverpool’s shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Agbonlahor said: ‘Mr Mentality Monster, Jurgen, five games away without a win this season – can you just get them ready for home games at a busy Anfield?
\’Can’t he prepare his squad as \’monster-minded\’ for away games? Because today was a clash of Liverpool. All players except Alisson were under five in ten today.
Reflecting on their feud in January, Agbonlahor said: “Klopp only knew my first name, not my middle name!” He knew what he was doing. It’s like saying, “Oh, I don’t know who that is. What’s his name?”
\’And since… now 16 points behind Arsenal. It was not a mentality monster season for Liverpool. All I’m saying is he’s unstable and Liverpool haven’t been what they should be this season.
When asked by his co-host if he thought he had personally ‘pissed off’ the Liverpool boss, Agbonlahor replied: ‘Yes’.
