“Lions’ Key Backup Expected to Depart for $2.5 Million Deal with Bears”

The Detroit Lions’ offense has been explosive in 2024, ranking first in the NFL with an average of 33.3 points per game and second with 410.5 yards per game. While quarterback Jared Goff, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and the team’s skill players receive most of the praise for the offensive success, the Lions’ offensive line is also among the league’s most dominant units.

Detroit’s starting offensive line is arguably the best in the NFL, but Dan Skipper, the top backup, plays a crucial role as well. Skipper has started five games this season, though his primary responsibility is often serving as an additional lineman to bolster the rushing attack.

Skipper is one of the most irreplaceable backups in the NFL. However, Isaac Zuniga of Last Word on Sports predicts that the veteran will leave Detroit this offseason to sign with the Chicago Bears on a one-year, $2.5 million deal.

Zuniga also forecasts that the Bears will add Atlanta Falcons center Drew Dalman, Philadelphia Eagles guard Mekhi Becton, and Miami Dolphins guard Robert Jones to their offensive line in the offseason. Furthermore, he anticipates that Chicago will hire Lions’ offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as the new head coach.

“It’s hard to imagine Ryan Poles investing heavily in more than two offensive line starters,” Zuniga wrote. “Instead, the Bears might turn to Miami Dolphins guard Robert Jones as a cost-effective option. For depth, Ben Johnson could bring in a familiar face in Dan Skipper.”

Skipper would be an excellent depth addition for the Bears, offering versatility to their offensive line and the ability to serve as the sixth lineman, much like his role in Detroit. Additionally, Skipper has proven capable when filling in at left tackle this season, allowing just one sack and 11 quarterback pressures over 135 pass-blocking snaps, with a 61.0 PFF pass-blocking grade.

While the Lions will likely try to retain Skipper this offseason, as the former undrafted free agent is integral to their offense and well-liked in the locker room, the Bears could be a compelling destination for him if he doesn’t stay in Detroit.
