A former NFL and University of Alabama football player has been arrested and charged in connection with a domestic violence incident that took place in December.
On December 30, Hoover Police responded to a call from a woman in the Lake Cyrus neighborhood who reported that her boyfriend, 34-year-old Marcell Dareus, had abused her.
The victim stated that an argument escalated when Dareus pushed her to the ground and used a metal object to damage her car. Dareus left the scene before police arrived.
After an investigation, authorities filed charges of domestic violence in the second and third degrees.
Dareus turned himself in at the Jefferson County Jail on Monday and was released after posting a $36,000 total bond.
Court records indicate that the victim has been granted a protection order against Dareus.

Bubba Thompson, ex-MLB outfielder, signs on with South Alabama football team as walk-on
In an exciting twist for sports fans, former MLB outfielder Bubba Thompson is venturing into football. According to AL.com, Thompson has signed on as a walk-on for the South Alabama football team.
Thompson shared a video on his social media accounts showing him throwing a football inside the South Alabama practice facility. South Alabama head coach Major Applewhite confirmed to AL.com that Thompson will be joining the team for the upcoming spring practices and will play as a quarterback.
Thompson isn’t a stranger to the position. He was an all-state quarterback at McGill-Toolen Catholic School in Mobile, Alabama, back in 2016. But for the last eight years, the 26-year-old has been focused on professional baseball, notably being a first-round pick of the Texas Rangers in 2017.
Despite being nearly 27 years old, Thompson still has five years of eligibility left at the collegiate level since he never attended college. His situation mirrors that of former MLB player Monte Harrison, who walked on to the Arkansas Razorbacks football team as a wide receiver for the 2024 season. Harrison made a notable contribution, catching two passes for 29 yards last season.
As a high school athlete, Thompson was a three-star football recruit with scholarship offers from Ole Miss and Tennessee. In his senior year at McGill-Toolen, he threw for 3,173 yards and 38 touchdowns, leading his team to a Class 7A state championship game in 2016.
Though Thompson ultimately committed to play baseball at Auburn and Alabama, he never attended college, instead making his mark in professional baseball. After reaching the Major Leagues in 2022, Thompson played 22 games, posting a .265 batting average with a home run and nine RBIs. He also had stints with the Cincinnati Reds during the 2024 season, appearing in 17 games.
Over the course of his MLB career, Thompson played 109 games, with a .232 batting average, one home run, 13 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases. In the minors, he showcased his skills with a .263 average, 52 home runs, 226 RBIs, and 135 stolen bases across 486 games.
As Thompson begins this new chapter in his athletic journey, fans will be eager to see how his football career unfolds at South Alabama.
