Lions QB Jared Goff Reveals Career Shift Beyond the NFL

In the midst of the Detroit Lions’ offseason, quarterback Jared Goff is stepping into a new venture that has nothing to do with football. While players typically take time for personal pursuits, Goff is taking his time to dive into something big off the field.

On January 31, Goff shared on social media that he’s teaming up with a prominent group of Detroit figures to bring a WNBA team back to the city. Despite hailing from California, Goff is embracing his role as a Detroiter for life.

The group is led by Tom Gores, the owner of the Detroit Pistons, and includes several big names like former NBA stars Grant Hill and Chris Webber, as well as Sheila Ford Hamp, the owner of the Detroit Lions. Goff took to his Instagram story, sharing his excitement: “I’m thrilled to join this inspiring group of leaders as we work to bring a WNBA team to Detroit! This is an incredible opportunity for our vibrant community and the most passionate fans in the country!”

Webber also announced the venture on his Instagram, saying, “Shout out to Tom Gores and the Ownership Group. We are focused on bringing a WNBA team back to Detroit.” He expressed his personal excitement for Michigan fans and women’s basketball, adding, “I’m so excited for girldads like me… Was going to post about how much fun it is coaching my daughter’s 2nd grade team… THE CHEETAH GIRLS… But now I can’t wait until our next practice to tell them about this!”

The history of the WNBA in Detroit goes back to the Detroit Shock, who played in the city from 1998 to 2009. During their time in Detroit, the Shock secured three WNBA championships (2003, 2006, 2008) and consistently ranked among the top teams in attendance. After relocating to Tulsa and later becoming the Dallas Wings in 2016, the franchise’s departure left a notable void.

Now, with the WNBA gaining even more momentum thanks to rising stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Cameron Brink, it’s clear why this group of investors sees an opportunity in returning the league to Detroit. Goff’s wife, Christen, is also part of the bid, sharing her enthusiasm online with the hashtag #LetsBringIt and a blue heart.

Detroit is not the only city vying for a new WNBA team. Other locations like Houston, Philadelphia, and Tennessee are also in the race. However, with the Detroit sports scene thriving—thanks to the Detroit Lions’ success and Pistons star Cade Cunningham earning national All-Star recognition—the Motor City could be primed for another major sports addition.
