Amon-Ra St. Brown envisions Lions acquiring Myles Garrett and an additional playmaker

In a recent episode of the St. Brown Brothers podcast, hosted by Detroit Lions’ standout Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brother Equanimeous, the duo shared their thoughts on a potential trade that could dramatically change the Lions’ defense. St. Brown, known for his candid commentary, discussed the possibility of the Lions acquiring Myles Garrett, the Cleveland Browns’ star defensive end, who recently expressed his desire to leave Cleveland.

Garrett, a four-time All-Pro and the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, made waves on Monday when he publicly announced his wish to continue his career away from the Browns. While Cleveland has stated it has no intention of trading Garrett, speculation is already swirling around what such a deal could look like.

Though Amon-Ra was uncertain about the Lions’ interest in Garrett, he pointed out how impactful Garrett could be, especially after the Lions’ defense struggled with injuries last season, including during the playoffs. “We were down numbers. We were hurt — a lot of injuries. But yeah, I should probably text Brad and see what they’re thinking about doing,” St. Brown said. He then went on to imagine a defensive line featuring Garrett alongside Detroit’s other key players: Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, and D.J. Reader. “Him and Aidan and Alim, D.J. and all of our D-line? Bro! I swear, if you have a D-line that’s nasty, you don’t need any corners. You don’t need anything. Just play it off.”

Garrett, who has had double-digit sacks in every season except his rookie year, would undoubtedly bolster Detroit’s defense. His 2023 season was impressive, posting 47 tackles, 22 for loss, three forced fumbles, and a career-high in tackles for loss.

Equanimeous, though intrigued by the potential move, acknowledged that the deal would likely require the Lions to part with significant assets, including draft picks and possibly a player. When the idea of including Aidan Hutchinson in a trade package came up, Amon-Ra quickly shut it down, saying, “Nah, (expletive) no. Aidan’s not going anywhere. Aidan’s about to get (contractually) locked up in three months. He’s locked — Lions for life.”

The St. Brown brothers also discussed Cooper Kupp, the star wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, who has been made available for trade as the Rams look to retool their roster. Kupp, a 2021 Triple Crown winner, is under contract for $20 million in 2025 and $19.85 million in 2026, unless his deal is restructured. Despite Kupp’s injury-riddled 2023 season, where he caught 67 passes for 710 yards and six touchdowns in just 12 games, Amon-Ra was quick to offer his praise for the veteran. “You get him, you’re getting a vet, you’re getting a good locker room guy, smart — probably learns the offense super quick,” St. Brown said. “He gets open, knows how to get open. It’s just — if you’re willing to pay that much money, then I guess. But you already know what you’re getting in Cooper Kupp.”

The possibility of adding Kupp to the Lions’ offense intrigued St. Brown, especially when imagining a lineup featuring himself, Kupp, Jameson Williams, and Tim Patrick. But before he could continue listing the offensive weapons, Equanimeous cut in, making it clear where his priorities lie. “You need (expletive) Myles Garrett. You don’t need Cooper Kupp,” he said. “You need defense, bro. Your offense is straight. You don’t need more offense.”

In the end, it’s clear the St. Brown brothers agree on one thing: if the Lions are looking to make a big splash, Myles Garrett should be the target — not another offensive weapon.
