Breaking News: Jets and Aaron Rodgers Headed for Split

In an unexpected turn of events, former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is reportedly moving the New York Jets in a new direction—one that no longer includes Aaron Rodgers.

The NFL offseason is buzzing with teams scrambling to strengthen their rosters, and the Jets, coming off a disappointing 5-12 finish in 2024, are no exception. With Glenn now at the helm as the Jets’ head coach, he’s focused on improving their fortunes for the upcoming season. However, it seems that a major shake-up is already in the works, with Rodgers now out of the picture.

Jets Reportedly Part Ways with Rodgers

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on February 9, Fox NFL Sunday’s Jay Glazer revealed that Rodgers and the Jets are parting ways. According to Glazer, Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to discuss his future with the team, only to learn that the Jets were moving forward without him.

Glazer clarified that this decision could see Rodgers being designated as a June 1 cut, allowing him to sign with any team by March 12 should he decide to continue his playing career. The timing of Rodgers’ flight back to meet the Jets suggests that, despite this split, he’s not yet ready to retire, as Glazer pointed out, “all signs point to him continuing to play. It just won’t be for the Jets.”

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport also confirmed the report, stating that both sides were heading in “different directions” that would ultimately lead to a break-up.

Glenn’s Previous Comments on Rodgers’ Future

In January, Aaron Glenn spoke publicly about Rodgers’ future with the Jets, saying, “Here’s what I do know: Aaron Rodgers will be talked about, it will be talked about. We’ve already texted that communication with Aaron Rodgers. And as we continue to look at the roster, we’ll make decisions accordingly. And that’s with a number of people on the team.”

Rodgers’ Uncertain Future and What’s Next

While the news of Rodgers’ departure from the Jets is surprising, it has been building for months. Nick Shook, NFL analyst, noted in a February 9 feature that Rodgers’ future has been clouded in uncertainty for some time. Rodgers himself has openly discussed his potential options in the media, including expressing a willingness to remain with the Jets—provided they still wanted him.

With Rodgers’ future now in flux, many NFL teams could be interested in acquiring a veteran quarterback. However, as Shook observed, Rodgers may only be seen as “an experienced bridge quarterback at this stage.”

As for Rodgers’ contract, if a trade or release happens before June 1, it will carry a hefty $49 million in dead cap for the Jets. However, the team could free up $9.5 million in cap space if the move occurs post-June 1.

As always, this is a developing story, and we’ll continue to monitor how this unfolds in the coming weeks.
