Jürgen Klopp and Jörg Schmadtke are already working on what follows the signing of Mac Allister, with several options being considered for further reinforcements in midfield.
Among the names being considered as possible additions for Liverpool are Manu Koné and Roméo Lavia, Sky Sports reported, while Nicolò Barella is another who has been mentioned as a more expensive option that could be available at the right price.
However, it makes sense that Khéphren Thuram could be next through the Anfield door. Thuram is currently absent from the Under-21 European Championships, but ECHO reports he is one of the main targets.
Once his involvement in the tournament is finalised, it is possible Liverpool will strike a deal.
Get Football News France reports that Nice would like to keep the player for another year if possible, but local outlet Nice Matin, translated by Get French Football News, has already reported that the tender for the 22-year-old has canceled could start at a similarly low price of $44m (£34m/€40m).
Obviously Liverpool should be interested. Klopp is prioritizing a player with great potential for the future who can make an instant impact in his midfield this summer and Thuram ticks both boxes.
Capable of playing as a number eight or as a more defensive player, he has the energy, physicality and drive that Liverpool at times lacked in the center last season.
According to stats compiled by stats site FBref, Thuram looks like future Barcelona superstar Gavi and the aforementioned Inter and Italy star Barella.
He excels in recovering the ball through interceptions and then has the ability to dribble past opponents and drag his team down the pitch.
Thuram is in the 89th percentile for expected assists compared to other midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues over the past 12 months and could take the next step with better players around him.
Liverpool are known to be interested in Thuram, although a deal is yet to be finalized. It is also clear why he would be an ideal candidate if a reasonable transfer price could be agreed with Nice.
With Mac Allister adding midfield advances in the form of assists, Thuram could be the man to offer something similar in terms of attacking threat but with the ball at his feet – according to Goal he was watching clips of Yaya Touré growing up and da gives it something resembling.
“I would be delighted if he [Thuram] comes to Liverpool,” Ibrahima Konaté told RMC earlier this month.
“I would take him under my wing and do everything I can to help him progress and become the player he wants to be.”
Given what Thuram excels at and what Liverpool need – and the fact that the Reds should be able to take a player from a team like Nice – it makes perfect sense that the Frenchman could be next in.
