Analyzing Alabama’s transfer portal additions: a closer look at the numbers and potential fit

Alabama football has added several significant players via the transfer portal. What do their statistics reveal about their performance and how do they stack up against the current roster?

There could be a chance for Alabama to bring in another player through the transfer portal in the upcoming weeks or during the spring. However, as of now, we have a clear picture of the key additions.

You may have already seen stories or taken a look at their basic statistics. But if you haven’t been following our roster tracker, it’s worth checking out.

I want to take a moment to dive deeper into the numbers and provide context on Alabama’s newest scholarship players—their production levels and how they compare to existing members of the roster.

All stats are provided by the NCAA and Pro Football Focus.

DL Kelby Collins
Kelby Collins, a former Florida player, presents an intriguing case due to the fluctuation in his performance over the past two seasons. In 2023, Collins played mostly on the edge, participating in 12 games with 261 total snaps. He recorded 23 tackles, two tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. However, in 2022, he shifted to the interior and appeared in only 6 games, totaling 57 snaps and just six tackles. His pass-rush attempts dropped significantly, with only 21 compared to 158 the previous year.

Collins is expected to return to rushing the passer at Alabama. His advanced statistics indicate solid performance in that role, generating 20 pressures in 2023. This marks an 11.7% pressure rate on pass-rush attempts, which ranks behind LT Overton’s 15.9% from the same season but is still ahead of Jordan Renaud (8.3%). It even surpasses Jah-Marien Latham (6.7%), who played Bandit last season but is expected to shift more to Wolf this year.

Ex-Alabama football player arrested on domestic violence charges

Dareus

A former NFL and University of Alabama football player has been arrested and charged in connection with a domestic violence incident that took place in December.

On December 30, Hoover Police responded to a call from a woman in the Lake Cyrus neighborhood who reported that her boyfriend, 34-year-old Marcell Dareus, had abused her.

The victim stated that an argument escalated when Dareus pushed her to the ground and used a metal object to damage her car. Dareus left the scene before police arrived.

After an investigation, authorities filed charges of domestic violence in the second and third degrees.

Dareus turned himself in at the Jefferson County Jail on Monday and was released after posting a $36,000 total bond.

Court records indicate that the victim has been granted a protection order against Dareus.
