‘Contacts in progress’: Liverpool are now working on a transfer breakthrough for £50m Romano

Liverpool are reportedly still working to make the breakthrough with Romeo Lavia, while Southampton are unwilling to stray from their £50million asking price.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds are still in talks with the Championship side over the signing of the Belgium international, with Liverpool hoping to reduce Southampton’s demands for the 19-year-old midfielder.

Southampton have been adamant about Lavia’s asking price this summer: Saints wanted £50million for their star fortune, a figure Liverpool simply cannot match in this market.

In fact, Liverpool could soon break away and agree to Southampton’s demands as Fabinho is set to leave for Saudi Arabia next week. And the ongoing talks with the Saints may soon become serious. Romano told Lavia: “Nothing has advanced in terms of offers or club-to-club negotiations, but contacts are taking place with the players’ agents and they are trying to understand the final price.”

Southampton won’t be letting Lavia go anytime soon and Saints are right to stick to their £50m price tag for the midfielder. And Liverpool could soon crumble under the pressure.

With Fabinho and Jordan Henderson set to receive nearly £55million from Liverpool next week, Lavia could be a realistic replacement for the midfield duo, especially given the Belgian’s age.

Furthermore, these two sales will give Southampton further incentive to stick with their £50million claim for Lavia, with Liverpool more than able to afford the South Coast fee.
