To say the Dallas Cowboys’ season has been underwhelming would be an understatement.
The Cowboys got off to a disastrous start, posting a 3-5 record and sitting in third place in the NFC East. Things only worsened when quarterback Dak Prescott and star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb both suffered injuries in Week 9, with Prescott placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring strain.
Before the injuries to Prescott and Lamb, however, another major setback had already hurt the defense—defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, who was limited to just four games after sustaining a foot injury.
Lawrence, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, is expected to return to full health soon. However, with the Cowboys’ struggles continuing, it seems increasingly unlikely that the 32-year-old will choose to stay with his long-time team.
Veteran players often prefer to sign with playoff-contending teams, and Lawrence is no exception. Recently, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox identified the Detroit Lions as one of the top teams that could pursue Lawrence this spring.
“Lawrence was simply superb this season before the injury. He tallied 14 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, 10 quarterback pressures and a forced fumble in four games. Lawrence should appeal to teams seeking pass-rush help or an improved run defense, though he’s best suited for those utilizing a four-man front,” Knox stated.
“Lawrence would find a terrific fit with the Lions, who should have star edge-rusher Aidan Hutchinson back by the spring. Hutchinson will remain Detroit’s primary pass-rusher, but the Lions desperately need a high-end complement.”
As a four-time Pro Bowler, Lawrence remains at the peak of his abilities, even in his 11th season. Pairing him with the Lions—who currently have the NFC’s best record and continue to rise under head coach Dan Campbell—could be a frightening prospect for opponents.
The Cowboys may be reluctant to lose Lawrence, whose three-year, $40 million contract has proven to be excellent value. However, with Prescott’s $240 million extension running through 2028, the Cowboys may have little choice in the matter.
