Cowboys expected to acquire superstar running back during the offseason

The Dallas Cowboys' rushing attack

The Dallas Cowboys’ rushing attack is in dire need of improvement, and a new prediction suggests they might acquire a superstar running back to bolster their efforts.

It’s widely acknowledged that the Cowboys are struggling significantly with their rushing game. They rank near the bottom in several crucial statistics, failing to establish a reliable ground offense. Recently, the team’s leading scorer was sidelined due to an unexplained illness, while the other running backs performed poorly.

Despite Jerry Jones not addressing the talent gap in the backfield during the offseason, change may be on the horizon. In light of the team’s struggles, the Cowboys are anticipated to tackle this issue in the offseason by targeting a top-tier running back.

According to PFF’s latest mock draft, the Cowboys are expected to select Boise State standout Ashton Jeanty. PFF notes, “The run game hasn’t been kind to the Cowboys in 2024 — on either side of the ball. They need a true running back who they can lean on, and Jeanty is the best in college football. He is having one of the most efficient and explosive rushing seasons ever recorded, boasting a 98.5 PFF rushing grade so far this year.”

Jeanty, a graduate of Lone Star High School in Frisco, Texas, has previously expressed his desire to join the Cowboys, envisioning himself as a “hometown hero.”

His head coach at Boise State has high praise for him. “This young man is a 10 out of 10 in everything he does,” said Boise State coach Spencer Danielson. “How he leads this team, how he motivates this team, and how he leads himself on a daily basis. He’s a generational talent-type kid in all facets.”

The responsibility now lies with Jerry Jones and his team to make the right decision.

The 2025 NFL Draft is scheduled to take place in Green Bay, Wisconsin, with the first round on Thursday, April 24, followed by rounds 2 and 3 on Friday, April 25, and the final rounds on Saturday, April 26.

Trade proposal between Cowboys and Panthers offers Dallas a crucial upgrade.

Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys’ offense has been severely underperforming over the first six games of the season, particularly in the last three weeks, where they haven’t scored more than 20 points in any game.

While the absence of reliable options beyond Ceedee Lamb in the passing game is a significant issue, the team’s rushing game has also faltered, ranking as the worst in the league. The duo of Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott hasn’t yielded positive results, leading the Cowboys to consider acquiring Dalvin Cook, who has been declining in recent years.

It’s clear that the Cowboys need an improvement at running back, and Chris Licata from Athlon Sports offers a compelling solution. He suggests a trade that would send Chuba Hubbard from the Carolina Panthers to Dallas, along with a 2025 seventh-round pick (via the San Francisco 49ers), while the Panthers would receive a 2025 fifth-round pick.

Hubbard, a younger and cost-effective option, is enjoying a career year with an average of 5.2 yards per carry, totaling 630 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns this season. He is in the final year of his four-year, $4.1 million rookie contract, and his role may decrease with the anticipated introduction of second-round pick Jonathon Brooks. Additionally, teammate Miles Sanders may also be considered for trade, though he would be a more expensive option.

Jerry Jones has indicated that he does not plan on being very active before the trade deadline, but if the Cowboys were to make a move, it would likely be for someone like Hubbard, who is not a costly acquisition.

Given Hubbard’s impressive performance this season, especially in light of the struggles within the Panthers’ offense, he would represent a significant enhancement to the Cowboys’ rushing attack. However, a potential issue is that Hubbard could enter free agency soon, which might make the Cowboys hesitant to pursue him as a rental player.
