South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has taken to social media to appeal for prayers and support after confirming that the university is actively working to help three former Gamecocks return safely from Israel, where they are currently playing professional basketball.
Three Former Gamecocks Caught in the Conflict
Tiffany Mitchell, Destiny Littleton, and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan — all alumni of South Carolina’s decorated program — were among a group of professional players based in Israel when the situation in the region escalated dramatically. The three former Gamecocks join several other ex-WNBA players who are also in the country during the unfolding crisis.
Staley wasted no time making her concern public, posting an emotional plea on X directed at her former players and the wider public:
“Please pray for our @GamecockWBB @TiffMitch25 @2121Mikiah @dstnylttltn24 who are in a war zone in Israel. We are working a plan to get home. Let us pray for our loved ones to return home safely asap! Thank you in advance.”
Players Respond From the Ground
Littleton, one of the three players at the center of the situation, also took to social media to acknowledge the gravity of the moment while maintaining composure:
“It’s 12:48 am and I’m going to attempt to get some sleep. Prayers for safety for everyone impacted.”
Her words painted a sobering picture of the reality facing the players on the ground as they await word on their return.
Broader Impact on Professional Players
The trio are not alone in navigating the crisis. Several other players with WNBA connections are also based in the Israeli league, highlighting the broader impact the regional conflict is having on American professional athletes overseas.
Mitchell had most recently played in Seattle, while Harrigan was previously associated with the Phoenix Mercury, underlining the caliber of players currently caught in the situation.
A Program That Looks After Its Own
Staley’s swift and public response reinforces what has long been a hallmark of the South Carolina program — a deeply personal commitment to the wellbeing of its players long after they leave Columbia.
As the situation continues to develop, prayers and attention from the basketball community remain firmly with the players as efforts to secure their safe return are underway.
