The Detroit Lions have brought on former Stanford head coach David Shaw as their passing game coordinator, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

“Former Stanford head coach David Shaw and the #Lions have agreed to terms on a multiyear deal to hire him as passing game coordinator, per sources. Shaw, 52, has worked with new OC John Morton before. A big hire for Dan Campbell’s remodeled staff,” Pelissero shared on X.

Shaw, who was a senior personnel executive for the Denver Broncos in 2024, now joins the Lions’ revamped offensive coaching team. This staff includes new offensive coordinator John Morton, who also comes from Denver, where he was the pass game coordinator.

Shaw had an impressive 11-year tenure as Stanford’s head coach from 2011 to 2022, taking over after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL. During his time there, Shaw posted a 96-54 record, guiding the Cardinal to three Pac-12 titles and two Rose Bowl victories. Notably, he coached Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Tanner Engstrand, the Lions’ former passing coordinator, is currently a candidate for the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator position. Engstrand worked with Aaron Glenn, the recently appointed head coach of the Jets, during Glenn’s tenure as Detroit’s defensive coordinator.

Before becoming Stanford’s head coach in 2011, Shaw served as the team’s offensive coordinator for four seasons.

In Shaw’s final four years as head coach, the Cardinal struggled, failing to win more than four games in a season and posting a 3-9 record in 2022.

Over his 12 seasons at Stanford, Shaw led the team to three Pac-12 championships and two Rose Bowl victories. With 96 career wins, Shaw holds the record for the most wins by any head coach in Stanford history, surpassing the previous record of 72 set by the legendary Pop Warner.

Shaw’s last NFL role was as the wide receivers coach for the Baltimore Ravens in 2005.

Lions WR Forced to Withdraw from Pro Bowl After Injury

Amon-Ra St. Brown

There will be no blue hair at the Pro Bowl this year after all.

Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has withdrawn from the event this weekend due to injury, and will be replaced by Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers, as announced by the Giants.

This means that the talented Detroit receiver, who posted 115 receptions and 1,200 receiving yards to earn his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection, will not be attending the annual event in Orlando.

St. Brown becomes the second Lions player to back out of the Pro Bowl. Earlier this week, offensive lineman Penei Sewell also withdrew, with fellow lineman Taylor Decker stepping in as his replacement.

However, Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Frank Ragnow, Brian Branch, and Jack Fox are still set to participate, along with Decker.

The Pro Bowl games are scheduled to take place from Thursday through Sunday, featuring a skills competition and a flag football game.
