Detroit Lions Receive Disappointing News as Playoffs Kick Off

The Detroit Lions are heading into the playoffs with a solid position, having secured the top seed in the NFC. However, as they prepare to face the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round on Saturday, January 18, there are some concerns that could impact the franchise’s future. While the Lions have had an impressive season, including the benefit of home games throughout the playoffs, some NFL experts are already looking ahead to what’s next for the team.

The foundation of the Lions’ success lies in their talented roster, solid coaching staff, and strong management under General Manager Brad Holmes. However, some of these key pieces may be leaving after this season. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean the Lions will fall off track, it’s certainly something to keep an eye on.

NFL Analyst Predicts Lions Will Lose Coordinators

As head coach interviews across the league heat up, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Lions may lose their top coordinators. Both Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson and Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn have attracted attention and have already interviewed with other NFL teams.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter made a special appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, January 14, to discuss the latest head coaching searches. During the segment, Schefter highlighted Glenn as a strong candidate for head coach positions, including with the New York Jets, and predicted both coordinators could be leaving the Lions.

“Aaron Glenn is gonna get a job in this cycle. Ben Johnson is gonna get a job in this cycle,” Schefter said. “And I think that there’s every possibility, and probably likelihood, that the Lions are gonna be losing both their coordinators in this cycle.” He also added, “I’d be really surprised if both of them didn’t come out of this with head coaching jobs.”

Schefter emphasized that it would be a “major upset” if Glenn didn’t secure a head coaching role, suggesting that he may be a prime target for a team like the Jets. Given Schefter’s reputation for insider knowledge, this could be an indication that major changes are on the horizon for the Lions.

Coach Dan Campbell Comments on Coordinators’ Futures

As the Lions focus on their playoff run, many are curious about the future of Glenn and Johnson. On Monday, January 13, Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked whether he had discussed the situation with his coordinators or received any updates about their interviews.

“Well, why would I want to know that? You think I want them to leave?” Campbell responded with a smile, acknowledging the tricky situation. After all, both coordinators have been crucial to the team’s success, contributing to their impressive 15-2 record this season.

“I’ve got an idea of how they’re doing. I have not run in there and asked if they’re leaving yet. I didn’t do that. At some point today, I’ll talk to them about what transpired,” Campbell added, suggesting that while he’s aware of the situation, he’s not pressing his coordinators for details just yet.

As the Lions march forward in their quest for a Super Bowl, the future of their coaching staff remains uncertain. Whether or not they retain their top coordinators, it’s clear the franchise will face some big decisions in the offseason.
