‘I’ll make myself available wherever’: Will Tippett Prepared to Play Anywhere to Support the Gamecocks

From centerfield to middle infield and beyond, junior Will Tippett has worn a variety of hats during his time as a Gamecock. His versatility and team-first mentality have made him a key player in the eyes of first-year head coach Paul Mainieri.

After South Carolina’s postseason run came to an end in 2024, Tippett took his talents to the prestigious Cape Cod League, the heart of college baseball. Along with fellow Gamecocks Ethan Petry and Talmadge LeCroy, Tippett worked hard to refine his skills as he prepared for his junior season.

“Every day going to the field, working with Coach (Scott Pickler), Coach (Craig Giannino), Petry, Talmadge. We had a great team out there and it was a lot of fun,” Tippett shared with GamecockCentral.

Over 54 at-bats in the Cape, Tippett hit .204, with two home runs and three RBIs, while striking out 25 times and walking 10. True to his style, he played multiple positions during the summer, including second base, shortstop, and all three outfield spots.

As Opening Day approaches, Tippett isn’t worried about settling into one position for the Gamecocks. His focus is simply on doing whatever it takes to help the team succeed.

“Wherever Mainieri wants me,” Tippett said. “Wherever the coaching staff wants me. Give the team the best chance of success, and I’ll make myself available wherever.”

Since the start of preseason, Tippett has played all over the field. While he hasn’t spent much time at shortstop — where he played last season — that’s because Henry Kaczmar has secured that spot. Instead, Tippett has primarily been at second base, with some action at the corner infield spots as well.

Tippett’s preparations didn’t end after his summer in the Cape. Upon returning home to Georgia, he immediately resumed training for his third year in garnet and black.

“I went home, worked with my old coach, travel ball, and kind of just stayed at it. Progress was slow, but, you know, steady,” Tippett explained.

After making a few final adjustments, Tippett feels ready for the upcoming season.

“Came back here and kind of just kept working on what we’ve been talking about,” he said. “I went home, worked with (my old coach) more, kind of just make some tweaks and changes with my setup and timing. We’ll see if that carries over.”
