Jets Expected to Acquire Lions' $6.5 Million Star Following Aaron Glenn's Hiring

The Jets might acquire more than just Aaron Glenn from the Lions.

The New York Jets have officially secured their new head coach: Aaron Glenn. A few weeks ago, the Jets made waves by announcing the hire of Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to take the helm of their team. However, it seems that the Jets may not stop there in their efforts to strengthen their roster.

According to Justin Fried from The Jet Press, there’s a strong possibility that the Jets might try to reunite Glenn with his former player, Marcus Davenport, who is set to hit free agency this offseason. Glenn, having coached Davenport both with the New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Lions, could now look to bring him to New York.

Fried notes, “The only pending Lions free agent to be coached by Aaron Glenn on multiple different teams is Marcus Davenport. Injuries have derailed the career of Davenport, who was once drafted to be Cameron Jordan’s potential replacement in New Orleans some seven years ago.”

Despite struggling with injuries over the past few seasons, Davenport has shown flashes of his potential when healthy. As Fried points out, “Davenport has flashed his upside when healthy, including a nine-sack campaign with the Saints in just 11 games in 2021.”

Unfortunately, injuries have limited his playing time, with Davenport participating in only six games over the past two years. However, Fried believes this could present an opportunity for the Jets: “The Jets need to find ways to bolster their defensive line this offseason, and taking a chance on a talent like Davenport makes sense. He’s unlikely to garner significant interest on the free-agent market given his extensive injury history.”

If he can stay healthy, Davenport could be a key addition to the Jets’ defensive front. While he may not be the long-term solution, his presence could provide a temporary fix for the 2025 season.

It would certainly make sense for Aaron Glenn to target Davenport if he feels confident in the player’s abilities, and this offseason could see the Jets make an aggressive push to sign him. Keep an eye on this potential move as the Jets look to strengthen their defense under Glenn’s leadership.
