Kobbie Mainoo shares injury update against Real Madrid as Manchester United teammates show their support

The midfielder has sent a positive message to Manchester United team-mates and fans following his pre-season injury, promising to come back “stronger”.

Manchester United prospect Kobbie Mainoo has vowed to return from injury a “stronger” person, thanking fans for their support.

The 18-year-old was forced off the pitch three minutes after a chance encounter with Blancos striker Rodrygo during Thursday’s 2-0 friendly defeat by Real Madrid. The teenager had to be helped off the pitch by two medics, who were unable to load his left foot.

After Erik ten Hag was unable to provide an immediate update on the midfielder following the game, Mainoo was seen leaving NRG Stadium in Texas on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

The extent of his injury has not yet been confirmed. The setback is a blow for the player and the club after an exciting pre-season in which he impressed against Leeds, Lyon and Arsenal. He started the match against Madrid ahead of Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay to show his coach’s confidence.

Mainoo has now taken to social media to process his comeback, writing on Instagram, “I’ll be stronger and be back in no time.” Thank you for your messages of support.”

A number of United team-mates sent their congratulations, including captain Bruno Fernandes, who wrote with a love heart emoji: “Waiting for you on the pitch soon.”

Alejandro Garnacho added, “Come back soon bro, you’re the best,” while Fred commented, “Get well soon bro, come back stronger.”

A host of academy stars who featured in Wednesday’s friendly against Wrexham also sent an encouraging message to Mainoo. Maxi Oyedele wrote: “He’s going crazy again”, while Marc Jurado – who scored the only goal against Wrexham – added: “Be back soon bro.”

Dan Gore, who was made captain of the youth team before being sent off in the friendly, wrote: ‘Be back soon bro’, followed by Toby Collyer: ‘Be back soon’.

After the match against Real Madrid, Ten Hag promised the young playmaker that more future opportunities would present themselves.

He said: “I understand the question [about his injury], but you never know immediately after a game. We have to wait and see what all the fuss is about. I hope he’s not sick and there will be opportunities.”
