The Lions face several important decisions this offseason, with one of their top priorities being to maintain a top-five offensive line. A new prediction suggests that Detroit might pursue a promising young guard in free agency.

Dolphins guard Robert Jones is a solid player with room to develop. Bleacher Report recommends that the Lions should consider signing him, particularly with the expected departure of aging veteran Kevin Zeitler.

To ensure they stay competitive in the trenches, signing Jones would be a smart, cost-effective move with potential upside.

Lions Sign G Robert Jones in New Offseason Suggestion

While rookie Christian Mahogany appears to be a better long-term solution, the Lions may also be looking to replace struggling guard Graham Glasgow. The fact that Mahogany is getting snaps highlights the need for more depth at the position, making Jones a logical target.

“Kevin Zeitler is about to be a 35-year-old free agent, while Graham Glasgow will turn 33 in the summer and only has two years left on his deal,” Bleacher Report writes. “So, Detroit could be looking for a young potential starter on the open market during free agency. Jones will turn just 26 years old next month and has been a solid player throughout his career, making the Dolphin a good fit in the Motor City.”

Although Jones’ performance isn’t on par with the Lions’ other starters, he ranks 84th out of 129 guards at Pro Football Focus. However, his physical attributes suggest there is potential for growth with better coaching.

Standing at six-foot-four and weighing 325 pounds, the former undrafted free agent has the size and athleticism needed to contribute positively to the offense. Detroit’s core offensive line will still be intact, and Jones could serve as a depth piece if the team finds stronger starting options.

Regardless of the direction the Lions take, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have set up the team for long-term success. As the young roster matures and salaries increase, smart, affordable acquisitions will be crucial to staying competitive.

Even if Jones isn’t the ultimate solution, he embodies the kind of player the Lions should look to sign.
