Lions expected to sign two-time All-Pro receiver with projected $16 million contract.

Stefon Diggs

It’s clear that the Detroit Lions are likely going to pursue a wide receiver this offseason. With only Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams providing consistent playmaking in 2024, the Lions are in need of more reliable receiving options. While the team could potentially target a receiver through the draft this April, Ian Valentino from The 33rd Team predicts that Detroit will instead turn to free agency, where they could sign Stefon Diggs of the Houston Texans.

Valentino explained, “Diggs is now primarily a slot receiver who relies on his hands, quickness, and toughness to move the chains and be a situational threat.” He also noted that Diggs would be a great fit for Detroit if the Texans decide to move on from him.

Valentino added, “During the last couple of years, the Lions have made do with several random receivers as their third option, including Tim Patrick and Josh Reynolds. Diggs is a little different than both of those guys because he wins underneath more than being a splash play hunter, but Detroit may want a steady option without Ben Johnson making everything work cohesively.”

Diggs, who was traded to Houston from the Buffalo Bills last offseason, played in only eight games in 2024 due to a torn ACL. Despite the injury, the veteran receiver finished with 47 catches, 496 yards, and three touchdowns. At 31 years old, and coming off a significant injury, Stefon Diggs remains a smart route runner with a ton of potential. He could be a great addition to Detroit’s offense, offering a solid third receiving option alongside St. Brown and Williams.

Looking at his contract, signing Diggs might not break the bank. Spotrac projects the former Day 3 pick to land a one-year deal worth $13.5 million, while Pro Football Focus suggests he could secure a fully guaranteed contract for $16 million over one season.

With an estimated $46 million in cap space this offseason, according to Over the Cap, the Lions have ample room to make a deal for Stefon Diggs and still address other roster needs.

However, it’s important to acknowledge the risks involved. While Diggs is a 2020 first-team All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, his age and knee injury could factor into his performance. Still, if healthy, he could be the missing piece to elevate the Lions’ passing game, particularly in the playoffs.
