Detroit Lions Eyeing New Cornerback Option Amid Free Agency Moves
It looks like the Detroit Lions will be searching for a cornerback this offseason. Carlton Davis, who was the team’s top corner for the 2024 season, saw his year cut short due to injury. With Davis now set to hit free agency, he’s made it clear he’s ready to test the market and secure a bigger contract. This likely takes the Lions out of the picture for bringing him back on a new deal.
If Davis leaves, the Lions will be looking to strengthen their cornerback group, which currently includes Amik Robertson, Terrion Arnold, and Ennis Rakestraw Jr..
In an interesting twist, Sterling Xie of Pro Football and Sports Network has suggested that the Lions could make a move for Trevon Diggs, the cornerback from the Dallas Cowboys. Diggs, who had an impressive start to his NFL career, made a name for himself in his rookie season, holding opposing quarterbacks to just a 54.8% completion rate when targeted.
In his second season, Diggs earned First Team All-Pro honors and led the NFL in interceptions with 11. He continued his strong play into his third season, earning a Pro Bowl nod. However, injuries have plagued him in the last couple of years. In 2023, he played only two games before suffering an ACL tear during practice, which ended his season. Despite this setback, he managed to return to form in 2024, holding opposing QBs to a 60% completion percentage and allowing just 7.2 yards per attempt.
For comparison, Davis allowed 7.5 yards per attempt this past season for the Lions, so Diggs actually outperformed him in that category.
What makes Diggs especially appealing is his age—just 27—and the fact that he is under contract for four more years. This could make him a long-term solution for the Lions’ cornerback position. If the move doesn’t work out, the dead cap on his contract becomes quite manageable after the 2025 season, giving the Lions some flexibility.
While Trevon Diggs wouldn’t come cheap, bringing in a proven playmaker with a history of big plays could prove to be a solid investment, provided the Cowboys are open to trading him. The Lions certainly have options here as they look to fill a crucial position. Stay tuned as this story develo
