Lions Free Agency Outlook: Top Defensive Line Move is Bringing Back Resurgent Player

Detroit Lions’ Defensive Moves – What’s Next?

Detroit Lions' Defensive Moves - What's Next?

Latest buzz surrounding the Detroit Lions and their defensive strategy as the offseason rolls on. Let’s break down what’s happening, starting with the ever-important defensive line.

First, let’s talk about Onwuzurike. The Lions’ defensive lineman has certainly been through his share of ups and downs. After recovering from surgeries, he made a solid comeback in 2023, playing through the full season and really making an impact in 2024. His ability to hold down both defensive end and interior snaps amid an injury-riddled team was crucial. Onwuzurike was one of the few bright spots in terms of creating pressure on a short-handed defense. It would certainly feel strange if the Lions let him walk to free agency after finally seeing his potential.

According to Pro Football Focus, Onwuzurike’s projected deal is around $16.5 million over two years. Given the limited top-tier talent in the market, it’s highly recommended the Lions jump on that offer before the price tag rises. A deal like that could really help solidify their defensive depth.

And now, let’s talk about another possible return—Al-Quadin Muhammad. The 29-year-old had a solid run last season with three sacks in just nine games and two starts. He was one of the few players who truly capitalized on his chances, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him back in Detroit for another go.

Khalil Mack

But that’s not all—let’s look at the edge rusher market, which is heating up. Khalil Mack, at 34, had an outstanding year for the Chargers, making him one of the most talked-about names right now. His numbers against the run were stellar, and although his sack and pressure stats dipped a bit, Mack still has a lot to offer. The Lions should definitely take a close look at whether Mack could be interested in joining a contender like them.

At this point in his career, Mack may prefer a shorter contract, and with his experience, he could provide an instant boost to Detroit’s defense. His style and leadership would be a perfect fit.

And then, there’s Chase Young—just 25 years old, but his career hasn’t gone quite as expected. While he’s not the same dominant force many envisioned when he was drafted in 2020, Young still holds a lot of potential. He played all 17 games last season, registering 5.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss. His injuries in Washington have held him back, but there’s no doubt the former blue-chip prospect still has the size and power to make an impact, especially as a partner for Aidan Hutchinson on the edge.

Now, if we’re talking about players who just won’t slow down, look no further than Calais Campbell. At 38, Campbell shows no signs of slowing down, starting all 17 games for the last two seasons. The six-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro could be a more affordable option for the Lions to add depth to their defense, and given his experience, Campbell might just prefer joining a Super Bowl contender at this stage in his career.

Another interesting name to keep an eye on is Tanoh Kpassagnon. Although Kpassagnon hasn’t crossed paths with Dan Campbell or former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn in New Orleans, his physicality and versatility make him an intriguing target. Standing 6-foot-7 and weighing in at 289 pounds, Kpassagnon can play both inside and outside, making him a good fit for the Lions’ defensive scheme. Though injuries limited him to just three games last season, he’s still a name worth watching as New Orleans brings in a new coaching staff.

Don’t forget about Poona Ford and Javon Kinlaw. Ford, at 29, has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career. After starting all 17 games for the Chargers last year, he recorded three sacks, one interception, five deflected passes, and eight tackles for loss. Meanwhile, Kinlaw, just 27, is still recovering from some injury setbacks but was once a top-15 pick in the draft—perhaps a reclamation project for the Lions to consider.

Finally, as we look at the broader edge defender market, outside of a few big names, it’s not exactly overflowing with game-changers. That’s likely why the Lions are consistently tied to the position in mock drafts and trade rumors. Detroit is clearly in the hunt for defensive talent to complement their growing roster.

Stay tuned, because as the offseason progresses, the Lions’ defensive lineup is going to be one of the most intriguing storylines to follow!

That’s all for now, but I’ll keep you updated on any breaking news. Back to you!
