Lions vs. Commanders playoff game projected to deliver $65M economic boost to Detroit

Commanders Fans make fun of Lions with Chant After NFC Wild-Card Victory

Washington Commanders fans are riding high after their team's dominant performance in Sunday night's wild-card round game, securing a 31-23 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This marks Washington's first playoff win since 2005, earning them a spot in the divisional round against the top-seeded Detroit Lions.

Despite the challenging task ahead, Commanders fans aren’t backing down. A viral TikTok video captured the energy, with fans chanting, "We want Detroit!" as they left Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The Commanders will face the Lions next Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m.

Much like the Lions last season, the Commanders have become this year's playoff underdogs after snapping a long winless streak in postseason play. But, unlike typical wild-card teams, the 13-5 Commanders aren't to be underestimated. With 12 wins in a tough NFC, Washington proved their regular-season success was no fluke, especially with their gritty win over Tampa Bay.

While Commanders fans showed up in force in Tampa, the price of tickets for the divisional game against the Lions is nearly four times higher, making a full-scale takeover unlikely. However, it’s clear that Washington’s loyal fanbase is sending a strong message ahead of next week’s primetime matchup.

This Saturday’s NFC divisional playoff game at Ford Field between the Detroit Lions and the Washington Commanders is expected to provide a significant economic boost for the city of Detroit. According to a recent analysis from the Anderson Economic Group based in East Lansing, the event is projected to generate a direct economic impact of $39.3 million. Additionally, the indirect impact, which includes spending tied to the event’s ripple effect, is estimated at $25.6 million. Combined, this brings the total economic impact to a substantial $64.9 million.

Direct spending includes things like purchasing game tickets, parking fees, and Lions merchandise, while indirect spending might involve local restaurants paying vendors to accommodate the increased number of visitors.

In a Thursday news release, the Anderson Economic Group emphasized that the analysis was conducted using a “rigorous methodology” which also took into account substitution effects, such as consumers choosing one event over another, and the portion of gate revenue retained by the NFL and other organizations.

The Anderson Economic Group has a track record of providing similar projections, including for last year’s record-breaking NFL Draft in Detroit.

Tyler Theile, Vice President and Director of Public Policy at the Anderson Economic Group, noted in a statement, “The indirect economic impact from increased consumption at retail establishments around Detroit will extend past Saturday’s game. Beyond the immediate benefits, the momentum of the Detroit Lions is another example of a positive national spotlight on the city that will enhance its reputation as a vibrant destination, creating long-term opportunities for tourism and economic development.”

That’s all for now. Keep tuning in for more updates as the game approaches!
