Liverpool have made an opening bid for one of their transfer targets. Liverpool have reportedly made a “substantial” opening bid for Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo said Liverpool have moved in the race to sign him and are willing to offer the player a salary worth 5m euros (£4.3m) per season.
The report adds that the financial aspect is a “significant challenge” for the Reds as they try to meet Veiga’s demands.
It has been made clear that Liverpool must honor the player’s €40m transfer clause if he has any chance of reaching an agreement with Celta.
However, if Liverpool can secure a deal for Veiga for just £34.4m (his sterling release clause), they will have made significant improvements to their midfield for a very small fee.
Alexis Mac Alister has already joined the Reds from Brighton this summer for just £35m and spending around £70m in total on two quality young midfielders in one window is a bargain for the Merseysiders.
It could also free up budget for Liverpool to target a right-back or centre-back in this window.
Veiga scored 11 La Liga goals last season as his side struggled for form.

Berba’s delighted for Ten Hag’s second season
Manchester United have made great progress under Erik ten Hag and will be motivated to find more success next season, says ex-Red Dimitar Berbatov.
The Bulgarian spoke to BetFred ahead of the 2023/24 season and was asked about United’s prospects in the Premier League after finishing third last season.
After winning the Carabao Cup and narrowly missing out on the Emirates FA Cup, Berbatov believes United can do more in Ten Hag’s second season.
“United must be [City’s biggest rival next season] because Erik ten Hag now knows everything that is going on at the club and his first season is now over,” said Dimitar.
“Erik’s expectation, the club’s expectation and the fans’ expectation should be to win the Premier League title next season.” “Obviously it will be difficult with what Manchester City have done this year, but Manchester United’s motivation should be to stop their dominance.”
Dimitar expects the 2023/24 season to be closely contested given Arsenal’s improvement and the anticipated resurgence of other rivals including Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
If Ten Hag can recruit as successfully as in 2022 – when Antony, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez were signed – then selection can begin, according to Dimi.
“You just have to look at a player who is capable of playing in Erik ten Hag’s system, because Manchester United have to fight for the Premier League title next season and do much better in the Champions League than last time out.”
Berbatov obviously knows what it feels like to win the Premier League as a Rossoneri, having won the title in 2009 and 2011.
