Ex-Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes the size of the Blues’ squad could be a problem for Mauricio Pochettino.
While Chelsea have sacked a lot of players this summer, they have also brought in a lot of new names.
Speaking about the dilemma that Mauricio Pochettino now faces on It’s All Coming Up, Sutton said: “Chelsea’s inflated squad was definitely a problem for Graham Potter and it will be a small problem for Pochettino.”
“But he needs to make up his mind quickly, which he did in fairness.”
At the end of July, Pochettino admitted his Chelsea side had too many players.
“We need 22, 23, 24 players and a few younger ones, that’s all,” the Argentine said as quoted by GOAL. “I’m so sorry because maybe the decision will be difficult, but we have to build a good balanced team that wants to fight for things.”
Who could Mauricio Pochettino get rid of before the transfer window closes?
As mentioned earlier, Chelsea parted ways with many players this summer, including N’Golo Kante, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount who left the club.
However, if Pochettino wants to reduce his squad further, several names come to mind.
Conor Gallagher, who has signed Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, could be a candidate to leave Stamford Bridge.
As the England international started last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool, he is now unlikely to become a regular. He may be pushing to move as he seeks guaranteed playing minutes, which could be important given Euro 2024 next summer.
Carney Chukwuemeka is another who may have to leave for the season due to the additions of Caicedo and Lavia.
Chelsea also appear to be quite strong in central defence, with Pochettino currently able to call on centre-backs like Thiago Silva and Levi Colwill. Could this force Trevoh Chalobah, for example, to leave the club? It cannot be ruled out that Pochettino wants to sanction further sales.
