Live from the Super Bowl, I’m here with an update on Cleveland Browns superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett, whose trade request is currently making waves. Garrett made his demand public on Monday via social media, citing his desire for a chance to compete for a Super Bowl, something he feels the Browns aren’t positioned to provide.
Garrett shared his thoughts in a heartfelt post: “While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent,” he wrote. “The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl. With that in mind, I have requested to be traded from the Cleveland Browns.”
Despite Garrett’s clear desire to move, reports indicate that the Browns are not keen on parting ways with their six-time Pro Bowler. However, with the trade request being made so publicly, it’s easy to imagine the team might eventually relent and honor his wishes.
When it comes to potential landing spots, the Detroit Lions are an obvious candidate. Detroit’s defense needs help across from Aidan Hutchinson, and Garrett would not only fill that role but elevate the unit significantly, boosting their Super Bowl aspirations.
Now, while in town for the Super Bowl, Garrett made the rounds at Radio Row on Wednesday. When asked about a possible move to the Lions, Garrett was careful not to comment directly. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported on X, “Myles Garrett making the rounds on radio row here at the Super Bowl, not taking trade questions. Asked him if he has any thoughts on playing for the Lions as he went from interview to interview, politely said: ‘Not yet.'”
With his trade request still fresh and under contract with the Browns, it’s no surprise Garrett was tight-lipped about the matter. However, it’s reasonable to believe that Garrett, who is aiming for a Super Bowl ring, is at least keeping the Lions in mind as a potential destination—especially given the chance to play alongside Hutchinson, who could relieve some of the pressure Garrett has felt in the past.
One important note to keep in mind: Garrett does not have a no-trade clause in his contract, meaning the Browns are free to trade him anywhere they see fit. Nevertheless, it seems likely they’ll at least make an effort to accommodate Garrett’s request. More updates to follow.
