The Detroit Lions are riding high with the best team in franchise history after an impressive 15-win season, setting their sights on a Super Bowl. This marks a new era for a team that has long struggled, with last season’s heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game still fresh in the minds of many. Now, the Lions are ready to take the next step as they host the Washington Commanders at Ford Field this Saturday.
Lions fans, known for their unwavering loyalty despite years of disappointment, are finally witnessing a team with true Super Bowl potential. This situation is unfamiliar for a fanbase that has never celebrated a Super Bowl win. But there’s one person who can relate to the anguish of Lions fans—Maxx Crosby, the superstar edge rusher for the Las Vegas Raiders, who grew up in Michigan and once rooted for the Lions.
In a recent interview “Good Morning Football” on Friday, Crosby joked that he’s feeling “kind of mad” at the Lions for finally becoming Super Bowl contenders, years after he had to endure their struggles as a fan. “It kind of bothers me, because I had to wait my whole childhood for them to be good. Now that I’m in the league, I’m on another team and they want to be Super Bowl contenders,” Crosby said. “So selfishly, I’m kind of mad at them.”
Despite his playful frustration, Crosby spoke highly of Lions head coach Dan Campbell, praising his commitment to the players. “They said he’ll literally die for the players. He lives by that. The things you see in the locker room post-game and the interviews and everything, that’s who he is. People kind of clowned him at first, they’re like, ‘The kneecaps and all this stuff is out this world,’ but he truly lives by that. And I know that for a fact,” Crosby explained.
Earlier in the season, after the Lions lost their star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson for the year, there was talk of a potential trade for Crosby, who endured another losing season with the Raiders. However, a deal never came to fruition, and Crosby remained in Las Vegas. But with Crosby’s future with the Raiders uncertain, there’s renewed hope that he could eventually return home in 2025.
Speaking on his podcast, Crosby admitted that major decisions lie ahead for him. “Obviously, there are a lot of decisions to be made,” Crosby said. “On a personal level, I gotta make the decision that’s best for me. I’m gonna see. We don’t know what the coach or front office is going to look like. There’s gonna be a lot of changes.”
With the future of Antonio Pierce and Tom Telesco uncertain, Crosby’s next move could hinge on the direction the Raiders take. If he’s not happy with what’s to come, there’s a real possibility that Crosby could request a trade. Given the respect the Raiders have for him, it’s likely they’d give him a say in where he goes.
One thing is clear: Crosby would love to return to his roots and play for the Lions. Detroit is still looking for a long-term solution opposite Hutchinson, and Crosby would be a perfect fit. Should the opportunity arise, the Lions should make every effort to bring him back home. Imagine a defense featuring both Crosby and Hutchinson—Lions fans can only dream of such a formidable duo in the near future.
