Recuperated veteran running back signed by the Texans to potentially compete for carries behind Joe Mixon, according to reports

The running back room of the Houston Texans is being expanded. The Texans tried out former Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers on Sunday, according to KPRC-2, the local NBC station in Houston. After that workout, NFL Media reports that Houston will sign Akers.

Akers, a former second-round selection, played his first three plus seasons in Los Angeles before being dealt to Minnesota at the beginning of the previous campaign. Despite suffering numerous Achilles problems throughout his career, he has 398 carries for 1,581 yards and 11 touchdowns.

His absence from all but one game of the 2021 regular season was caused by the first of those; nevertheless, he made a comeback for the last game and the Rams’ Super Bowl run. After just six games, he suffered his second Achilles tear late in the previous season, ending his time with Minnesota.

Devin Singletary signed a free agent contract with the New York Giants, while the Texans traded for Joe Mixon from the Cincinnati Bengals, causing some changes in the running back room already this offseason. The team still has Dare Ogunbowale, J.J. Taylor, Jawhar Jordan, a sixth-round pick, and former starter Dameon Pierce on the roster.
