Detroit Lions: Backup QB, Free-Agent Signings, and Draft Picks
Do the Lions Need a Better Backup Quarterback?
Christian Booher weighed in on the Lions’ backup QB situation, noting that Hendon Hooker is a solid option. Despite not playing in his rookie year, Hooker had a full training camp this time around, and with another year of development, he should be ready to contribute in 2025. “Hooker is talented and showed promise when given opportunities,” Booher shared. He emphasized that the Lions’ decision to bring in veteran Teddy Bridgewater was also about his mentorship role.
Vito Chirco agreed but added that “there’s a case for sticking with Hooker”. The free-agent quarterback pool doesn’t offer much excitement with names like Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Drew Lock. “If I were the Lions, I’d continue with Hooker,” he said, suggesting it’s worth giving him the chance to prove himself.
A Splash Free-Agent Signing: Who Should It Be?
Booher’s top pick for a splash signing was on the defensive side. The Lions’ cornerback unit could use a veteran presence, and “D.J. Reed and Charvarious Ward are the top options” for strengthening that group. But he didn’t stop there. He also threw “Khalil Mack” into the mix as a potential edge rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson. While Mack’s age might be a concern, Booher noted that his experience could bring a lot to the defense, especially as a mentor.
Chirco, however, focused on the offensive line, suggesting “Trey Smith”, the 26-year-old guard from the Kansas City Chiefs. Smith’s excellent performance in 2024, allowing zero sacks and finishing with a 78.8 grade from Pro Football Focus, caught Chirco’s eye. “If the Lions lose Kevin Zeitler, Smith would be a solid replacement,” he said.
Myles Garrett Trade Talk: Should the Lions Bite?
On the potential of a Myles Garrett trade, Booher acknowledged Garrett’s star power but was cautious about sacrificing core players. “If it comes at the expense of one of their key pieces, I’m not sure it’s worth it.”
Chirco was more direct, saying that “it depends on the player”. If the Browns asked for a player like Brock Wright, he’d be all in. But if it’s someone like Jahmyr Gibbs or Brian Branch? That’s a no-go. He believes the Lions wouldn’t part with key players in a trade for Garrett, but if it’s just draft picks? “I’d part with them all day long,” he said.
Early Draft Crush for the Lions
Booher’s early draft crush is Jahdae Barron, a cornerback from Texas. While the Lions already drafted a corner in 2024, Booher highlighted Barron’s versatility. “He’s a Swiss-army-knife in the secondary,” he explained, pointing out that Barron could slot in at nickel or boundary corner, depending on team needs.
Chirco, on the other hand, is high on Mike Green, an EDGE rusher from Marshall. Detroit could use a complementary player to Aidan Hutchinson, and Green fits the bill with his ability to both rush the passer and stop the run. “I think he’d be a great addition at No. 28 overall,” Chirco added.
Surprise Player the Lions Could Move On From in 2025
Both Booher and Chirco agreed that Graham Glasgow could be the surprise player to leave in 2025. Despite signing a new deal last offseason, Glasgow’s performance in 2024 left much to be desired. Booher mentioned that with “Christian Mahogany ready to contribute”, Glasgow might not survive a training camp position battle. Chirco echoed that sentiment, pointing out Glasgow’s struggles in 2024, where he allowed 36 pressures and received a poor grade from Pro Football Focus. “Even though he’s signed through 2026, moving on from Glasgow wouldn’t be a shock,” he said.
That’s all for now—stay tuned for more updates!
