Sellers Recognized as FWAA National Freshman Offensive Player of the Year

Live from the latest breaking news in college football, University of South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers has just been named the 2024 National Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. This prestigious award, presented by Chris Doering Mortgage and granted by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), was announced today.

Standing tall at 6-3 and weighing in at 242 pounds, Sellers had an outstanding season as a redshirt freshman. He was named to the third-team All-SEC and honored as the SEC Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches. Throughout the season, Sellers completed 64.9 percent of his passes, racking up 2,274 yards and 17 touchdowns on 172 completions out of 265 attempts. Additionally, his rushing performance stood out—he rushed for 655 yards on 155 carries (averaging 4.2 yards per carry), ranking third among SEC quarterbacks. His seven rushing touchdowns tied for second in the category. Sellers was also recognized twice with the SEC Offensive Player of the Week award and twice named SEC Freshman of the Week.

Along with Josiah Thompson (offensive line) and Dylan Stewart (defensive line), Sellers is part of the first group of South Carolina Gamecocks to be named to the FWAA Freshman All-America Team since 2011, when Jadeveon Clowney earned the honor. This trio of freshmen, alongside Kyle Kennard, Nick Emmanwori, and Kai Kroeger (all recognized on the regular All-America Team this year), makes for a total of six FWAA All-Americans from South Carolina—leading all FBS programs.

Sellers will be honored alongside other standout freshmen like Leonard Moore of Notre Dame (Freshman Defensive Player of the Year), Nolan Hauser of Clemson (Freshman Special Teams Player of the Year), and Fran Brown, head coach at Syracuse, who will receive the First-Year Coach Award. A special ceremony will take place on February 24 at Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille in Gainesville, Florida.

For context, past winners of the FWAA National Freshman Players of the Year include notable names like Trevor Lawrence of Clemson in 2018, Brock Bowers of Georgia in 2021, and Drake Maye of North Carolina in 2022.

This year, alongside Sellers, the 2024 National Freshman Offensive Player of the Year recognition extends to Leonard Moore of Notre Dame, Nolan Hauser of Clemson, and several other incredible rising stars across college football. Stay tuned for more updates as these future stars continue to shine!
