Shocking return to the Premier League by an ex-Man United attacker

A former Manchester United youth player signed for a side promoted from the Championship last season.

Former Manchester United attacker Tahith Chong has sealed a surprise move for Premier League new boys Luton Town.

Growing up through the youth ranks at Old Trafford, the 23-year-old made 16 senior appearances for United, all during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure as manager.

Chong was loaned out to Werder Bremen and Club Brugge while with the Red Devils and rejoined Birmingham City in July 2021.The deal was finalized last year and the winger made 41 appearances for the Blues last season.

Although his performances were often mixed, Chong showed enough potential for Luton to make an offer for him and a deal for the winger was announced on Friday.

Following his introduction as the club’s third signing this summer, for a fee of around £4m, Chong told the Luton website:

‘In the few hours I’ve been here I already feel like he really is family. “. club.”I’m a football fan, I’ve seen a few matches, so I’ve seen how [the team] has played and shows solidarity and unity – and you can only do that if you’re a family club.

I think it’s important because every club faces adversity – it won’t always go well – but when you’re a family club you get through it together and it’s easier as a family.

“Chong’s arrival follows the arrival of Chiedozie Ogbene and Mads Anderson alongside Rob Edwards as they prepare for their first season in the Premier League after earning promotion via the play-offs in May.

The Hatters kick off the season with a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on 12 August before hosting Burnley the following week.

Chong will make his first return to Old Trafford on the weekend of November 11 when Luton travel to United.
