Running back worked out for Texans

Houston:A league source claims that the Texans worked out veteran running back Cam Akers on Sunday.

After being traded and suffering another torn Achilles tendon, Akers, a former second-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams, has also attracted interest from the Minnesota Vikings, where he played last season. He caught 11 catches for 70 yards and ran for 138 yards and one touchdown in six games.

The Texans worked out Deon Jackson and Miyan Williams earlier this week as part of their evaluation process for free agent running backs. Akers played a role in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory team following his comeback from his initial Achilles tendon rupture. Prior to the season, he suffered an Achilles tear during a workout, but he was able to return to the active roster in December. He scored 21 rushing yards on 13 rushes and added three receptions for 14 yards in the Super Bowl, which the team won 23–20.

Akers, 25, is a former Florida State standout who is 5-foot-10 and 217 pounds. In his career, he has run for 1,581 yards at a rate of four yards per carry with 11 touchdowns and 38 receptions for 320 yards and one touchdown.

He averaged 4.2 yards per carry in 2022 while playing for the Rams, when he ran for 786 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns. His career fumble total is a mere three.

After being traded to the Vikings for a sixth-round draft pick the previous season, he made his NFL debut against the Carolina Panthers, rushing for 40 yards on five carries and collecting two catches for 11 yards. After rupturing his Achilles against the Falcons, he was sidelined and put on injured reserve.

The Mississippi native caught 69 catches for 486 yards and seven scores at Florida State in addition to running for 2,875 yards and 27 touchdowns.
