Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has removed the club from his bio on one of his social media accounts in a further sign that he could leave the club this summer.
The Spanish midfielder signed for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020 and has been a key player under Jurgen Klopp ever since fit.
However, since the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, there has been speculation over his future.
Athletic’s James Pearce reported last week that the Reds are likely to allow Thiago and Joel Matip to leave the club once their contracts expire at the end of next season.
However, he added that Liverpool plan to have Thiago in the first team for the season unless there is a change from a big money league like the Saudi Pro League. Despite this, the player’s latest ‘update’ could be a sign of his staying at Anfield for the long haul.
Thiago removes Liverpool from Instagram bio
In the age of social media, transfer news mostly comes from the media and clubs, but speculation can also be fueled by player actions on any platform.
As noted by the Anfield Edition Twitter account, the Spaniard has now removed Liverpool from his Instagram bio, another sign he’s on his way to leaving Anfield.
The last photo of the 32-year-old in a Liverpool shirt was released on May 28 as he accepted the PFA Community Champion award for his work with his foundation, Fondazione Alcantara.
The Spaniard, who was born in Italy before moving to Spain at the age of five, played for Barcelona and Bayern Munich before moving to Liverpool in the summer of 2020. He won three trophies during his time at Anfield but also struggled with injuries.
Thiago’s removal of the club’s name from his biography follows a video released by Liverpool showing a camera panning over a row of shirts hanging in the dressing room.
The video shows a number of players with their new 2023-24 home shirts displayed, while the departing trio of Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wear their 2022-23 home shirts.
But the video also shows Thiago and Matip in last season’s shirts, suggesting both players could leave Anfield this summer.
Liverpool wore their new home shirt in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in the penultimate Premier League game of last season.
And although Thiago missed the game through injury, Matip was part of the match squad, although he ended up being an unused substitute before starting the 4-4 draw against relegated Southampton on the final day of the season.
