Trent Kone-Doherty of the Academy was named the SuperCupNI Player of the Competition

Liverpool U18’s Trent Kone-Doherty was named Player of the Tournament at the SuperCupNI on Friday night.

While the week ended with the young Reds’ 3-0 defeat by Hertha BSC, there was a personal reward for the young Derry winger, who had a strong week for the Academy.

Though not on the score sheet, Kone-Doherty was a constant threat on the left wing in both starts – against Hertha and the 1-1 draw against Valencia – providing a memorable cameo in the final 20 minutes as a substitute substitute in the 1-0 win over Manchester United.

In praise of Kone-Doherty, U18 manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson told Liverpoolfc.com: “Trent has had a good week, as has everyone else.

“It’s probably been a bit more difficult for Trent, he’s dealing with injury and it’s been his first taste of competition, and he’s obviously coming home, which brings a different mentality. “People are watching him, cheering him on and it’s great for him to come back and do well.

“Overall it was a very good week, a fantastic tournament, great opponents. It was a really positive week, we will remember it fondly.

After losing to Hertha on Friday, Bridge-Wilkinson said: “Obviously the highlight wasn’t exactly what we wanted and we didn’t play particularly well [against Hertha], but we were able to take a lot. positives and we are on the way.” just before the start of our season in two weeks.

“You can take a lot out of it. It’s been tough, we’re young compared to some of the other teams here and we’ve stayed true to what we try to do, how we want to play and we’ll continue to improve in the coming weeks.”

The highlight of the week was the 1-0 win over United at the Coleraine Showgrounds on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 3,500 and throngs of supporters of both teams.
