The Detroit Lions have already made a significant offseason move by picking up wide receiver Jameson Williams’ fifth-year option, ensuring he’s locked in through the 2026 season. But that may not be the end of the story — according to new reports, the team might be looking to lock him in even longer, and it could happen “sooner than later.”
That bit of breaking news comes from Jeff Risdon of the Detroit Lions Podcast, who delivered it with some serious conviction.
“(Jameson Williams’ contract extension) is getting done sooner than later,” Risdon said during a recent episode. “Very, very, very, extraordinarily confident on that.”
And honestly, it’s not hard to see why the Lions are leaning in this direction. After a quiet start to his NFL career, Williams exploded onto the scene last season — racking up 1,001 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, both career highs. The Alabama standout showcased the kind of electric playmaking ability that made him a first-round pick to begin with.
Still, this aggressive move by Detroit might raise a few eyebrows. After all, the Lions already control Williams’ rights for two more years, so technically, there’s no immediate urgency. There’s still plenty of time to evaluate his progress, especially to confirm whether last season’s leap wasn’t just a flash in the pan.
But here’s the other side of that coin: if Williams continues to rise — and there’s every expectation inside the building that he will — waiting could drive his price tag way up.
Just listen to what offensive assistant John Morton had to say about the young receiver’s offseason:
“Unbelievable,” Morton said. “When I first got here, he came in to see me and we had a chat. This is how I painted the picture, this is what you need to do and this is how I see it — and he’s been unbelievable.”
“In the meetings, his attention to detail… I mean, I’m so excited to see him this year. It’s going to be a breakout year for him. I can’t wait. I just can’t wait, man.”
If an extension goes through, Jameson Williams would join Amon-Ra St. Brown as the second wide receiver to earn a major financial commitment from this front office — a sign that Detroit is serious about building a long-term offensive core.
Stay tuned — if this momentum continues, we could see ink on paper much earlier than expected.
