What we know about Dominik Szoboszlai’s transfer: medical , costs and more

Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to become Jürgen Klopp’s second midfield signing this summer. So, what are the final details of the contract?

It was first reported that the 22-year-old was in talks with the club when David Ornstein of The Athletic wrote that Liverpool wanted a transfer that was considered “complicated” at the time.

Interest in the player was initially played down by Liverpool, but attitudes quickly changed and David Lynch reported for This Is Anfield that “optimism” was growing at the club that a deal was possible.

Newcastle were also seen as strong contenders for the Hungarian’s arrival, but Sky Sports’ Melissa Reddy was among those who hinted the player would prefer a move to Merseyside.

Progress soon followed and the Reds opted to trigger a release clause in the midfielder’s contract to complete a deal worth around £60m just before the June 30 deadline.

Bundesliga journalist and This Is Anfield contributor Chris Williams tweeted on Friday that Liverpool initially sought to negotiate a “payment in two installments” with RB Leipzig but the offer was rejected by the German club.

The deal between the two clubs now leaves only the usual transfer formalities, with The Times’ Paul Joyce tweeting on Saturday that Szoboszlai has been cleared by RB Leipzig to travel to Merseyside to undergo medical checks.

The length of the contract that Szoboszlai will be offered is currently unknown, but it will likely be in line with the five-year contract given to Alexis Mac Allister last month, which expires in 2028.

It looks like we won’t have to wait much longer to see Liverpool’s latest redshirt recruit, and official confirmation will almost certainly be a matter of when rather than if.

Klopp’s summer rebuilding is starting to take shape and there are still six weeks left until the new Premier League season!
