Why the Houston Texans held their cards close to the chest against the Chicago Bears

When facing the Chicago Bears, the Houston Texans didn’t want to give out too much information.

Although the Houston Texans have a few tricks up their sleeves this season, none of them were displayed against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night in the Hall of Fame Game. However, quarterback Davis Mills said there was a valid reason for it.

“We play them again in Week Two, I believe. We were careful not to reveal too much,” Mills added.

Of course, we’re essentially operating our offense’s base. The plan that we set up during those initial installs. Thus, I believe that, for the most part, we performed that at a high level. When we encounter these guys again very soon, I believe we still have some stuff in the bag.

Teams seldom play one other this early in the regular season and in the preseason, but the Texans and Bears, who saw the induction of Devin Hester and Andre Johnson into the Hall of Fame this past weekend, are one such team. The Texans thought they performed their fundamental game plan well, despite having one.

“Going out there and playing live football is a great opportunity,” Mills stated. “We’ve been working hard at camp so far, and every day is a battle against our own teammates. It’s exciting to go out there and play a different opponent and different scheme and truly see how our efforts are paying off.” Though there is obviously still much work to be done, I felt the guys that stepped up today did a good job playing their roles.

In Week 2, Sunday Night Football between the Texans and Bears takes place at NRG Stadium.
