Top Free Agent Candidate Surfaces as Potential Replacement for Kevin Zeitler

Live from Detroit, one of the most crucial decisions looming for Lions general manager Brad Holmes this offseason is how to ensure the offensive line continues to perform at a top level. With two elite running backs on the roster and a quarterback who must be protected to thrive, Holmes’ decisions here will play a major role in the team’s sustained success moving forward.

Veteran Kevin Zeitler, who joined Detroit on a one-year deal last offseason, adjusted well to the system, posting a career-high 87.2 run blocking grade according to Pro Football Focus. However, as his contract expires and he nears his age-35 season, questions arise about whether he’ll return. Consequently, the Lions are keeping a close eye on potential help for their interior offensive line.

One standout name in free agency is Trey Smith, the Kansas City Chiefs’ guard. As reported by Bleacher Report, “With Zeitler scheduled to hit free agency, the Lions need to decide on their options at right guard. Trey Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs—the second-ranked player on Bleacher Report’s post-regular-season free-agent big board—would be a prime target if Zeitler departs.”

Smith has proven himself as one of the most reliable guards in the league, missing just one start in his four seasons. His stellar performance could even propel him to a record-setting contract, potentially becoming the highest-paid guard, a title currently held by Landon Dickerson at $21 million annually. In 2024, Smith notably didn’t allow a sack, demonstrating his dominance in pass protection. He’s also been impressive in the run game, showcasing his agility in pulling and ability to reach the second level with ease.

On the other hand, the Lions have promising young depth in Christian Mahogany. The rookie started two games, including a Divisional Round loss to Washington, and earned an impressive 91.5 overall offensive grade. This performance came despite Mahogany missing training camp and the first few weeks of the season due to a battle with mono. With a full offseason under his belt, he could continue to develop and possibly contend for a starting position. Should Zeitler leave and the Lions miss out on Smith, Mahogany could very well rise to the top of the depth chart at right guard.

Detroit could also explore the draft for reinforcements, with Tyler Booker from Alabama standing out as one of the top prospects.

If the Lions manage to secure a high-caliber free agent like Smith, it could set the stage for a competition between Mahogany and Graham Glasgow at left guard. Glasgow had a tough first year in his three-year, $20 million contract extension and could face added pressure to perform in 2025.
