Two Manchester United players will not return to training due to sale plans

Man United fly to the United States for their pre-season tour on Wednesday and two internationals are unlikely to be on the plane.

Eric Bailly and Alex Telles were absent from Manchester United’s first day of training on Saturday.

Bailly and Telles are staples for United this summer and neither are expected to be included in the touring squad which leaves for the United States on Wednesday.

Bailly, 29, and Telles, 30, are both out of contract next year and their one-year extensions would not come into effect if United did not sell them during the summer transfer window or winter.

Telles spent last season on loan at Sevilla, where he started in the Europa League final win over Roma. Saudi club Al-Nassr are interested in signing the Brazilian left-back. Bailly was loaned to Marseille last season and the French club had to buy him for €6m if he qualified for the Champions League and Bailly played a number of games.

Marseille finished third in Ligue 1 but Bailly made just 23 appearances in a season in which he missed seven games through suspension.

United already have two senior left-backs in Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, while Alvaro Fernandez started there in Wednesday’s friendly win over Leeds United.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are coach Erik ten Hag’s favorite duo at half-time and Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire are all ahead of Bailly in the pecking order.

Bailly and Telles were the only two players on international duty in June who were absent from Saturday’s session.

Maguire, Shaw, Lindelof, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Anthony Elanga, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia and Facundo Pellistri were all present at Carrington.

United bought Bailly from Villarreal in June 2016 for £30million, but the injury-prone Ivory Coast international was averaging less than 20 appearances a season before his loan spell at Marseille.

Despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s public reservations, United handed Bailly a new three-year contract in April 2021. He has made 11 starts since then and has not played for United since December 2021.

Telles joined Porto on deadline day in October 2020 for an initial fee of £13.6m but was deemed surplus when Malacia signed Ten Hags’ first signing last summer.
